Current Position:

Partner, Human Factors Consultants, 1987-present

Forensic Scientist and Expert Witness

Since 1980 I have applied to forensic science my scientific training and experience in the evaluation and design of training programs, methodology, assessment, and factors that affect the accuracy of outcomes. I have consulted with attorneys, offered seminars, published, presented at conferences and provided expert testimony on factors that affect the accuracy of child and adult testimony, including: how the witness is questioned, the effects of new information and the passage of time on memory; on comprehension of language, authorship, verbal harassment and how to elicit information from children; and on the factors that affect the accuracy of fingerprint comparisons. With respect to factors that affect the accuracy of fingerprint comparisons and identifications from lineups, I have, with Ralph Haber, presented our work at meetings of both latent print examiners who testify on behalf of the prosecution and at meetings of defense attorneys. I have, with Ralph Haber, written an affidavit in 1990 applying the research evidence on the accuracy of long term memory to memory retrieval, submitted to the U.S. Federal District Court (Northern Illinois) in support of a petitioner. In 2005 we submitted a Brief Amici to the Massachusetts Supreme Court on the scientific basis of fingerprint evidence in support of a petitioner.

Human Factors Consultants Partnership

I am a partner with my husband, Ralph Norman Haber, in the firm Human Factors Consultants. Together, we provide consultation, reviews of existing scientific research, and we perform new research for legal and business clients and for the government. We also provide expert testimony in court. We specialize in issues involving the application of science to methods (for example, of training, or ways to evaluate hazards, or how best to question a witness), to accuracy (for example, what factors affect the accuracy of memory, of eyewitness identification from a lineup, of fingerprint comparisons, of a child’s memory, of a recovered memory); and to assessment (for example, of performance, of the safety of a work environment, of the quantitative success of a training program).
