Grading Policy: For high school credit students need an A or a B for the semester grade.

Students who receive a C or lower will need to sign up to retake the class as a high school freshman.

Quarter grade = 80% classwork and homework + 20% nine weeks exam

Semester grade = 40% nine weeks + 40% nine weeks + 20% semester exam.

Students also need to pass the comprehensive Biology End of Course Exam (EOC), which is given in April/May. A passing score on the Biology EOC is one of the requirements for the high school Scholars Diploma pathway.

Course work: Students will be assigned homework, class work, projects, and exams.

Students need to complete their classwork and their homework AS WELL AS study to excel in this class.

Parent-teacher communication - Parents may reach me by e-mail, remind, or phone. Also, via Skyward, I post and email out a weekly email that contains the learning goals, classwork, and homework for the week, as well as send reminders through remind for quizzes, tests, and projects so that both students and parents may keep informed as to the assignments and their due dates as well as any important news.

Website: I have two websites at this time: mrslugoscience., and a school website available from eCampus through epassport. In these websites, I include handouts, class PowerPoints, Nearpods, and quizzes. I will be migrating all content to the school website. Please bear with me as I transition content.

Course work - Students will be assigned bell work, class work, homework, labs, projects, and exams.

Agenda - Every Monday, students are responsible for writing the weekly agenda. Additionally, I will e-mail homework assignments and weekly learning goals through Skyward, and text daily.

Bell work - All students are responsible for completing bell work upon entering the classroom. This assignment is done in the first 5 minutes of class.

Class work - The majority of class work is completed in the student’s interactive science notebook. Loose pages, like handouts or labs, will be attached into the interactive science notebook. Notebook procedures will be explained in depth the first week of school. Notebook checks will occur periodically throughout the school year.

Tests and Quizzes - Students will have a test at the end of every unit/concept. Quizzes will be used to determine student progress towards understanding of learning goals and will occur intermittently.

Exams - Students will take a comprehensive nine weeks exam each quarter. Nine weeks exams are worth 20% of the nine weeks grade. Study guides are posted on Quizlet.

Labs - Lab activities will be done with collaborative groups as much as possible. Depending on instruction, students will have to either complete questions about the lab or complete a lab report.

Projects/Activities - There will be one major project due in each semester.

Homework - Students will have DAILY homework ranging from reading, to studying, to written assignments. There will be weekly readings from the textbook and/or videos to watch, as well as workbook pages that reinforce and review the textbook content. Additionally, students may be given science articles, worksheets, or questions, assignments through eCampus etc. Homework is assigned on Monday for the week and should be copied into the student planner. Homework is stamped for completion on the due date, corrected in class, and then collected and recorded for a grade at the end of the unit so that the student always has his/her papers to study and review for quizzes and tests.

Make up work - If students are absent, it is their responsibility to notify the teacher and obtain missing assignments. In the event that a student will miss class, they can access electronic copies and agendas through Skyward. Students will have the number of days missed plus 1 to turn in missing assignments.

Resources - The student textbook this year will be accessed through ePassport. Under Instructional Resources tab, click on PearsonSuccessNet to access textbook and workbook. Additional resources, like the PowerPoint notes, virtual labs, handouts, and Nearpods, are posted online via Skyward and ECampus.

Once the county uploads class lists, students will also have their own individual access. This information is provided for parents, new students, transfer students, and students who get locked out of their account temporarily.

Quizlet – Quizlet is a free digital flashcards study website and app. Terms and questions to review and study for quizzes, tests, exams, and the EOC are posted. Also, for free, students may create their own flashcard stacks to review topics/subjects of their own choosing.
