Biology extends the life sciences to more abstract concepts including, interdependence of organisms, the relationship between matter, energy, and organisms, the behavior of organisms and evolution. These concepts are investigated through laboratory experiences and field work designed for students to develop appropriate knowledge and skills in science as inquiry. **Please note that each semester of this course must be passed for graduation. Also, the material covered this semester will be included on the EOC given toward the end of the second semester. Grade DistributionSummative Grades = 35% Formative Grades= 30% Homework = 15% Final Exam = 20%Summative Grades Summative grades will include all assessments given at the completion of a unit/portion of a unit. Summative grades will demonstrate student mastery of the topic before moving forward to the next unit/portion of a unit. The student will be expected to take a summative assessment even if he/she is absent the day before. Formative Grades Formative grades will include all assessments given within a unit/portion of a unit. Formative grades will demonstrate the current level of student understanding. Formative assessments include all lab activities and any graded quiz that is used to measure student understanding prior to the unit summative assessment.Homework Homework will be assigned throughout the semester and is due either the day it is assigned or the following day. Homework is collected as a packet periodically, on the day of a summative assessments. Homework completed on time will be given full credit, Homework completed by the day of collection will be given half credit. Homework packets will be accepted 1 day late for a 10% grade reduction. Students will receive one homework grade for the entire packet.Final Exam A comprehensive final will be given at the end of each semester. The Georgia Milestone End of Course Test will count as the student’s final exam grade for the spring semester. You will be contacted if tardies become a problem in this class.Behavior All students are expected to be RICH Raiders. While questions and class discussions are an important part of the learning process, respect, integrity, citizenship and hard work are the overriding principals in the classroom. Instruction is important. No passes will be given during the first 10 minutes or the last 10 minutes of class, or during instructionRISE RISE (Re-teaching Instructional Support and Enrichment) will be held in 3310 on Thursdays beginning at 7:30 am. All students are welcome to attend RISE whenever they feel they need additional help with concepts or work covered in class. However, ALL students with a class grade of 74% or lower are required to attend RISE until his/her grade gets above 74%. Recovery A student with an overall grade of 74 or lower is eligible to request recovery on a major assessment (tests) in which they score 74 or lower after attending class regularlyattending RISE completing all related unit course workThe recovery grade will replace the previous grade but will not exceed 74%. Recovery must be initiated BY THE STUDENT within 5 days of the grade being posted. The student must then complete the recovery process within 10 days of requesting. Once the student has completed the recovery protocol he/she will arrange a time with the teacher to take an alternate recovery test.Class work & HomeworkClasswork and homework is typically do the day it is assigned or the following day. If the work is completed on time it is stamp “Check by Ms. Johnson” and students keep the work. All class work & homework is collected together as a packet on the day of the assessment. A rubric is given prior to the assessment date that will list all assignments that are due.LabsLabs are typically due at the end of the class period and are turned in to the basket at the front of the classroom.Make-up WorkIt is the students responsibility to find out about instruction & assignments missed when absent. Students will be given the same number of days to complete make up work as the absence. Extra copies of hand out will be kept in the green file box at the back of the classroom, and copies of all handouts will be posted to the class calendar. Make up work is turned into the basket at the front of the classroom.
