A student can apply to (1) the Anne Hutchinson Honors Program, (2) Computer Science/Technology Program or (3) Zoned.The Anne Hutchinson Honors Program is a screened program that students must apply to through MySchools. Students are ranked using their 7th Grade ELA/Math scores, average of core subjects (Math, ELA, Science and Social Studies) and attendance. The application program code is X16B. Students should check their zoning with their guidance counselor.What courses does Lehman offer for students who enjoy coding?Students have the option to pursue our Computer Science track during their time at Lehman High School. Incoming 9th graders are exposed to the basics of coding in our Introductory Computer Science course. Students can continue to develop their coding skills by enrolling in Python and Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles I. I read that Lehman has a Digital Arts program; what does that mean?Part of our vision is to promote the integration of art into our students’ daily lives. We have embraced the belief that technology can be used to further all aspects of an education, including the arts. As incoming 9th graders, students have an opportunity to engage in an Arts Survey course designed to expose students to the basics of art theory. In Art Survey, students will have access to iPads to work with Adobe Fresco, a drawing and painting app. Students can continue to develop their appreciation and art skills in a variety of courses including: Digital Photography, Advanced Photoshop, Intermediate Art using Adobe Illustrator, Introduction to Film, Advanced Film/Leman TV, Digital Music and Minecraft. Does Lehman offer courses in the arts?Our Art Department includes professionals that have an enormous amount of experience. Currently, one of our instructors is a published comic book artist with his second issue almost ready for print. Our traditional arts courses include drawing and painting. Students who demonstrate exceptional skills have an opportunity to enroll in an advanced arts course to prepare a portfolio for art school/program applications.I’m more into the performing arts, what does Lehman have to offer me?Lehman offers a variety of courses with respect to the performing arts. We have a 4 year dance program that exposes students to a variety of dance techniques ranging from traditional dance training to hip-hop. Over the 4 years, students engage in learning about dance theory and practice. Students in the dance program have an opportunity to perform twice a year at school events.We are proud of our theater program. Still in its infancy, we believe that theater skills allow students to find their voice and express themselves in a unique way. Our instructors have real world experience in the field and bring invaluable experiences to the classroom to share with students. Students engage in theater games, performing and writing. Our students have competed in city-wide competitions and have helped bring Lehman into the light of theatrical performing arts.Does Lehman have a band?With respect to our music program students can elect to enroll in our Rock Band program. Entering 9th graders will have an opportunity to experience playing the guitar and/or drums. To support the Rock Band program we have invested in purchasing additional electronic drum sets that expanded the number of students who can learn to play or continue to develop their drum skills. What advanced courses does Lehman offer for college credit?Lehman offers students both Advanced Placement (AP) and SUNY (State University of NY) courses. Current AP courses include: English Language, English Literature, Calculus AB, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, US Government, US History and Computer Science Principles.SUNY courses are taught by Lehman teachers. Students have an opportunity to earn 3 SUNY college credits for each course they complete. Current courses include: Calculus, English Composition and Public Health.Lehman High School also partners with Lehman College in the College Now program. Students can enroll in college courses, for credit, at Lehman College.What language courses does Lehman offer?Currently we offer language courses in Spanish and American Sign Language.What college and career supports does Lehman offer students and families?College and career planning begins in the 9th grade, by providing students with a foundation about expectations for graduation and an initial exploration into possible careers. Counselors guide students and families through each stage of post secondary plans through school events (FAFSA night, Junior and Senior parent night, college application week, college trips), individual/group college counseling sessions, SAT prep and 1 to 1 college essay writing. We have developed relationships with many post secondary institutions and host regular informational sessions during Junior and Senior year, so students can engage with institution representatives. Additionally, all grade levels have the opportunity to meet and engage with a number of professionals in a variety of fields including healthcare, law, research, business, to list a few, during yearly Career Days.What academic support does Lehman provide their students?We understand that the transition from middle school to high school is a time of excitement and nervousness for both students and parents. Lehman offers a Summer Bridge program to help students make a smooth transition to high school. The summer program allows students to earn a high school credit in ELA and Math, as well as, provides an opportunity for incoming students to get to know each other, so the first day of school is less stressful.Our instructional staff provide multiple opportunities for our students to seek support. Students can meet with teachers during common lunch periods and after school. Additionally, students can also meet with department representatives for weekend tutoring.All teachers are easily accessible through email.What social-emotional supports does Lehman provide their students?Support begins with our Guidance Department. Every student is assigned to a guidance counselor who will work with your child for their duration at Lehman. Guidance counselors provide social-emotional support and are a reservoir of resources for both students and families. Counselors and students will forge strong relationships that extend well past graduation. The counseling department is the link to help students and families know the wide range of services available to them. The guidance department consistently works to connect students and families to the following services: Montefiore ClinicMontefiore clinic is located within Lehman. They provide students with a full suite of medical services as well as dental and mental health services. East Side House SettlementEast Side House (ESH) Settlement is our partnering Community Based Organization (CBO). ESH provides additional services to our students including mentoring, internship opportunities, etc. ESH also partners with health organizations to provide vision testing, counseling, etc. ESH partners with our coordinator of school events to plan and support numerous opportunities for students to engage such as trips to visit potential colleges/universities, Broadway shows, museums, etc.What does the normal school day look like for an incoming 9th grader?An incoming 9th grader’s school day begins at 8:15am and ends at 3:23pm. Students should arrive by 7:45am to have enough time to get breakfast and visit their assigned locker. Parents can join our Parent Association (PA) and School Leadership Team (SLT). Additionally, we host a number of weekend events where parents can take classes like Zumba or resume writing.What extracurricular activities does Lehman offer?Lehman has cultivated an environment that provides students with multiple opportunities to explore their interests.
