MINECRAFT: PARENT IMPACT

GUIDE

"I've always been interested in making games where the player can affect the game world in big ways. I guess in a sense it feels like you're playing with the world instead of in the world."

----Markus `Notch' Persson, creator

Mi necraft is a blockbuster hit with kids around the world! In fact, it is very popular with teachers as well because it provides an open, creative play space for exploring ideas about the world. One of the most loved features is how players can search for, and discover crafting recipes that allow them to build everything from simple tools like shovels and axes to collect wood more effectively, to creating complex circuits using "redstone," a rare element in the Minecraft world. More than simply crafting, Minecraft is a "sandbox" game that allows players to build entire worlds to their liking and share their world with friends.

THEME FOR THIS GUIDE: Resource Management.

Progressing in Minecraft requires the crafting of a variety of materials using resources that are in limited supply such as wood from trees and ores that are mined such as diamonds and gold. Players must learn to farm and breed animals to ensure that new sources become available for use.

How and Why To Use This

Guide

Games are great space for developing problem solving strategies. They provide a safe space to try out different solutions where the "cost" of failure is very low- players can simply try again to find a better answer.

By challenging your child to manage resources wisely in the game, they will begin to learn important ideas about resource management and sustainability, that you can help them apply to their daily lives.
