MARIST COLLEGE

MARIST COLLEGE Catholic School for Girls, Years 7 to 13

Term 1 - Number 8 Friday 8th February 2019

From the Principal

KEY DATES

Welcome to 2019. It is a privilege to be serving Marist College as Principal, and I thank you for entrusting the education of your daughter to us.

We started the year with a Powhiri. This was a hugely successful experience for all those involved. It was fantastic to see so many students return to school to be part of this occasion. It really demonstrated our core values of presence and family spirit in action.

It was also an opportunity to share some of our key strategic directions with our new parents and students of the school.

In 2019 Marist College will:

? Spiritually grow our community partnerships through leadership and service programmes at all year levels. We expect that our young women will be living role models of our core values; presence, empowerment, family spirit and in Mary's way.

? Achieve academic excellence at all levels of the school from learning support through to scholarship exams. 1. 100% of our young women will gain University Entrance. 2. We will gain 20 Scholarship in the New Zealand Scholarship Examinations. 3. 40% of our NCEA certificate results will be endorsed with Excellence. 4. All students in years 7-10 will shift one curriculum level by the end of 2019.

? We expect that all students will participate in a co-curricular activity for their school. - Sport ? competitively or socially, - Music ? playing a musical instrument or in the choir, - Performing Arts ? Auditioning for the production of Jesus Christ Superstar, - Cultural Groups ? Kapa Haka, Diversity Stage, Family Festival, - Club ? Young Vinnies, Coding, Environmental, Debating or the Media Club.

As Principal, I will lead a school that will educate courageous young woman to becomes leaders in their communities. Our ladies will graduate as well qualified, faith driven, competitive nurturing women who have a sense of purpose and a sense of belonging.

Marist girls will become Marist women who are successful in their own right.

From the Head Girl

Service leadership means to serve your community and those around you. Leaders are not spectators. Leaders make conscious decisions everyday to step out of their comfort zones. Leaders are principle-centred, they are people who put their values and principles into actions through their choices, relationships and commitments. As a year 13 cohort we created a Motto which is, "uplifted by each other, unified by faith". This is tied into leadership as we are driven by our faith to better our communities and relationships with each other. Leadership is about working as one cohesive unit rather than standing alone. We uplift each other to serve our community and to serve alongside one another. Leadership starts with relationships; without connections we will not be effective leaders. This year I want to strive to make better connections within our community and within the College so that I can become a successful and effective role model for others. This year we commit ourselves to lead with kindness and confidence, to lead from within rather than in front of.

Marist Youth Leader

During the summer break sixteen of our Year 13 students travelled down to Hato Paora College near Feilding for a full week of leadership training run by the Marist Youth Leader team. Alongside student leaders from eight other Marist schools, our students were challenged to leave their comfort zones, face fears, develop skills important for teamwork, reflect on their own values and principles, and strive for greatness this year in their role as leaders. Fr. Mark Walls SM, the main facilitator of the programme, constantly called us on to strive for excellence and be the `best version of ourselves'.

Listening to presentations on themes such as `servant leadership', `being a proactive leader', and having `the ability to fail', really brought home the responsibility and the gift that it is to be called upon to be a leader. It was such a joy to meet and spend time with students and staff from our fellow Marist schools and to hear their ideas and goals for the future. We prayed together, ate together, and worked together every day, becoming like one big family by the end of the week.

A huge thank you goes to the Marist Youth Leader team who poured themselves out during the week to bring us a programme designed to bring out the best in us!
