Madame Louise Fréchette is a Distinguished Fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation of Waterloo, Ontario where she chairs a project on Nuclear energy and the challenges of global governance. She was invited by the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to be a member of the Commission of Eminent Persons which issued a report in 2008 on the challenges of nuclear energy challenges and the future of the IAEA. She currently serves on the Advisory Committee to the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament established by the governments of Australia and Japan in October 2008.

She is the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Pearson peacekeeping Centre, a member of the Boards of Directors of the Council of Foreign Relations of Montreal (CORIM), CARE Canada, the Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal as well as a member of the Board of Governors of the University of Waterloo. She also serves on the Board of Visitors of the Dickey Center at Darthmouth College in Hanover, NH and the International Advisory Board of Security Council Report in New York.

From 1998 to 2006, Madame Fréchette was Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations. The first incumbent of the post, she assisted Secretary- General Kofi Annan in the full range of his responsibilities. Prior to this, Madame Fréchette pursued a career in the Public Service of Canada, serving notably as Ambassador to Argentina and Uruguay (1985-1988) , Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations (1992-1994), Associate Deputy Minister of Finance (1995) and Deputy Minister of National Defence (1995-1998).

Madame Fréchette has a degree in history from the University of Montreal and a Certificate in economy from the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium. She has received honorary degrees from the universities of St-Mary,s , Ottawa, Laval, Montreal, Carleton, Waterloo, Queen’s, McGill, St Francis-Xavier. Guelph , Université du Québec (ENAP) and the Royal Military College in Canada and from Kyung Hee University in Seoul, Korea and the University of Turin, Italy.

She received the Distinguished Canadian Leadership Award of the University of Ottawa in 2005 and was honoured by the public Policy Forum in 2006. She is the 2008 recipient of the UNIFEM Canada Award.

Madame Fréchette is an Officer of the Order of Canada.
