II. Reading Comprehension ( 6 m. )

Read the following passage and then answer the questions below :

The moon is our nearest neighbour in space, so a visit to the moon has been the aim of space explorers. The moon is about a quarter of a million miles away. Our Earth is four times bigger than the moon, which circles round us once a

month. The Earth turns too, turning a different face to the moon every night.

The movement of the moon and the earth together as they circle the sun gives us our fixed months, days and nights. We can see with any telescope that the moon has high mountains. Between the mountains there are hollow places which astronomers still call "seas." We know now that there are no seas of water on the moon. There are also round holes which were probably made by meteors

hitting the moon.

The atmosphere of the moon is like a thin veil over the moon's face while our own atmosphere is thicker. We can only see half the moon from the Earth. The other half is always turned away as it circles us. But this half was first seen in

1959 when the Russian spaceship traveled round the moon for the first time.
