Paper Presented at Workshops and Training Sessions

• Organized, hosted, presented lectures and laboratory sessions at two teachers’ workshops on “Concepts in Genetic Engineering” on July18-22 and December 12-16, 2005. A joint project of the Biotechnology Centre, UWI, Mona, the Scientific Research Council and the Ministry of Education. Approximately 45 teachers from High Schools, Community Colleges, Teachers’ Colleges and Heart Trust Academy in Jamaica attended the workshops. Each workshop included ten (10) hours of lectures and six laboratory sessions (14 hours) conducted by the teaching staff and graduate students of the Biotechnology Centre and Department of Basic Medical Sciences (Biochemistry Section), UWI over the five (5) days.

• Organized, hosted, presented lectures and laboratory sessions at workshops on “Concepts in Genetic Engineering” for Cape and A level biology high school students in Jamaica. Three workshops have been hosted so far, February 27-28, 2006, December 18-19, 2006 and July 10-12, 2007. More than 140 students from numerous high schools in Jamaica have been trained in recombinant DNA technology, biotechnology and related areas. Each workshop included five (5) hours of lectures and seven (7) hours of laboratory sessions conducted by Dr Roye and her research team (graduate students) in the Biotechnology Centre, UWI. Two workshops are expected to be hosted annually.

PUBLIC SERVICE

Member of the National Coordinating Committee for Agricultural Research and Development (NCCARD) vegetable cluster. The immediate charge of this cluster is to develop a national plant health policy and legislative framework and coordination of plant health research programs and services for vegetable production in Jamaica.
