TAIWAN MINISTRY OF EDUCATION MANDARIN SCHOLARSHIP

CHINESE GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIP

Since September 2008 through the goodwill of the China Scholarship Council (CSC) and the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in New York, the Department of Asian Studies at Williams College has been invited to nominate Williams students each year to receive a “Chinese Government Scholarship” to study in China. The scholarship allows the student to study either Mandarin language in a university-affiliated language training center, or a major field in a degree-granting program (either in Chinese or in English), at one of the 115 universities and colleges located all over China which are approved by CSC. The scholarship term is either one academic year (from September 2019 to July 2020), or multiple years (starting from September 2019) if the candidate chooses to pursue a master’s of doctoral degree. This year as many as four fellowships could be available.

Please visit or to see approved institutions and programs. Students may use this scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in China but they should also apply for those programs separately. (Please note that American-run language programs in China such as ACC, CET, or PIB are not eligible for this scholarship.)

The recipient of the scholarship will be entitled to a tuition waiver (ranging from RMB ¥20,000 to ¥34,000 depending on the program), free university dormitory housing, and be exempt from all school-related expenses (including fees and costs for registration, application, lab, and textbooks). The recipient will also receive a monthly stipend in the amount of RMB¥2,500 (enough to support all of your daily meals and basic needs as a student), and free comprehensive medical insurance. Applicants should note that international airfare, visa application fees, and miscellaneous expenses are not included.

Basic eligibility requirements for students interested in applying for the scholarship are:

1. Must not be a citizen of the People’s Republic of China

2. Currently a student at Williams College (including graduating seniors)

While any student who meets the above basic requirements is eligible to apply, priority will be given to seniors, Chinese or Asian Studies majors, and those students who have taken Chinese language through the 400 level. In the case of rising juniors who wish to go to China for junior year abroad, it is important to coordinate with the Study Away Office concerning accredited schools in China and the minimum number of class hours weekly that is required in order for credit to be granted.

To apply for the scholarship, please prepare the following:

1) a one-page statement about your study plan in English (In the statement, discuss your reasons for applying and how studying in China relates to your future study and career plans);

2) names of two tenured Williams College Professors who have agreed to write recommendation letters for you. (Their letters are not needed at this moment for this internal application. However, if you are selected, they will need to provide the recommendation letters in early February to China Scholarship Council and the institution where you intend to study. Their letters can be written either in English or Chinese. You are advised to contact potential references as early as possible.)

3) Since this is a guaranteed scholarship, please also indicate how committed you are to this scholarship if selected. (You are strongly encouraged to discuss this scholarship with your family members before you apply since this will involve an extended period of overseas travel.)

4) a copy of your current transcript;

Compile these files into one PDF file and submit through the GLOW course “Asian Studies Funding Opportunities” (you may self enroll at ). If you do not know how to compile a PDF file, please consult with the OIT help desk. (You should be able to use a scanner or a digital sender, located in the libraries, to easily generate PDF files). The deadline for submission is noon Friday, February 15th, 2019.

The candidates selected will fill out a formal application, which must be forwarded to the Consulate General of People’s Republic of China in New York by March 25. The scholarship award will be formally announced by the China Scholarship Council on July 31, 2019. Students who have questions about the scholarship should contact Professor Chang via e-mail at cchang@williams.edu.
