Graduates Survey Project in the Sultanate of Oman

What does Graduates Survey mean?

It is a periodical follow up process for graduates of higher education institutions to know the extent of their joining the labor market, convenience of their qualifications, specializations and skills with the requirements of the labor market. Due to the high importance of this survey for the concerned in the higher education institutions, parents and guardians, students and society in general, the Ministry of Higher Education tries to make a survey for the graduates of the private universities and colleges in the Sultanate of Oman.

What is the objective of the project?

The project has many objectives among the most important are:

1. Provision of information and data about the required programmes in the labor market for the professional guidance institutions, students expected to join higher education and parents.

2. Evaluation of the standard of graduates of higher education system in terms of knowledge and skills that prepare them to join the labor market.

3. Know the extent of convenience of programmes and specializations of private higher education to the labor market, provide a feedback for the higher education institutions in order to contribute in enriching the higher education programmes and development.

What are the data required by the graduates survey project?

This project attempts to get the data through three phases experienced by the graduate from the higher education institutions. These phases are:

? University Study Phase: includes the educational environment provided by the university/ college in preparing the graduate and provide him with the knowledge and skills required to join the labor market.

? Transfer from higher education to labor market phase: includes the period between the transfer of the graduate from graduating until getting a permanent job. Knowing the methods used by the graduate to search for a job after graduation, length of time and its effect on the knowledge and skills of the graduate, graduate changing from one job to another job temporarily and convenience of the job with his specialization during this period.

? Work Phase: includes the stability of the graduate in a permanent job and starting his professional track and his evaluation of the relationship between the higher education institutions and labor market.

Who will benefit from the data of the graduates survey project?

? Graduates: to know the best methods used to get a job opportunity and the skills required by the labor market.

? New students and their parents: to know the programmes and specializations required by the labor market so they can join those programmes and specializations.

? Higher Education Institutions: to benefit from the opinion of graduates in improving and developing their programmes.

? Decision Makers: to have scientific indices that contribute in developing the higher education policies in the Sultanate of Oman.

? Employers: to benefit from the indices related to the number of graduates looking for jobs in the various specializations to fulfill their requirements in terms of the new employment cadres.

Who are targeted from the graduates survey project?

Graduates of private higher education institutions holders of Diploma and Bachelor Degrees who graduated in the academic years 2003-2004, 2004-2005 and 2007-2008.

How will they contribute in making the project a success?

Due to the importance of the project and its positive impact on various sides especially increasing the capability of graduates to join the labor market and raise the standard of higher education in the Sultanate therefore the participation of graduates in this project represents a high importance for achieving the sought for goals. They can participate in the project through doing the following:

2. Participate in filling the electronic questionnaire which shall be available on the project website shortly. The importance of answering all the questionnaire questions to enter the competition for prizes (to be announced later) which shall be provided by the Ministry of Higher Education for the participants.
