Jasmine comes to us most recently from Thailand, where she was a Fulbright English Teacher Assistant last school year. She has a 5-12 MN teaching license in Social Studies. We will be working with her to get an out-of-field permission in middle school mathematics and our middle school instructional coach, Nico Zbacnik, has taught the course before and will directly support her work as a math teacher this year. Even though she is not trained as a math teacher we are very excited as she is clearly a gifted teacher who wants so much to be a part of the CPA community that she is open to teaching outside of her subject area. Jasmine is confident and we have full faith in her abilities while also committing to support her accordingly.Lynn Ketelsen was hired as Special Education Paraprofessional for the Elementary School. Lynn comes to us with a background in business, marketing and finance. She is looking for a career change and wants to work with children to improve their lives. As you can see, little has changed since last year’s submission.V.AUTHORIZER A.Fall Leadership ForumI attended the UST Fall Leadership Forum at the downtown Minneapolis campus of the University of St. Thomas. The forum this year was focused on English language instruction. During the panel, it was clear that a lot of great work was going on around the state in this area. We have a lot of non-native English Language speaking families in MN, and the highest ratio of refugee immigrants of any state in the country. Although obviously not always true, refugee students often qualify as SLIFE (Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education), a category which brings a specific set of needs as well and generally overlaps with EL learners. We have a strong EL program at CPA and, as you all know, as we have been developing it for 25 years. Interestingly, a representative of the ELM project at Hamline was on the panel. Although many traditional districts are working with ELM, we are one of only five charter schools involved in the work with Hamline. It was clear to me during the panel that we are on the cutting edge in this field, and I was excited to extend an invitation to other school leaders to visit and see the work we are doing.VI.Other BusinessA.Update on Cruz-GuzmanAfter attending the fall MACS regional meeting I have updated information about the mediation process in Cruz Guzman. One of the leaders of charter schools who are participating in the mediation gave a positive report about the direction of things - although he was still unwilling to say he thought the mediation would be successful. He suspects that the case will go to trial - although the ramifications of that are still not clear.IX.Building Company/Facility Expansion UpdateGroundbreaking was done well with Karen Rusthoven, Joe Nathan, and other dignitaries plus 3rd and 4th grade peacebuilders.
