INTRODUCTION

I open this week with the words of II Corinthians 9:15, “Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.”

The setting of our lesson continues according to Dr. H. L. Willmington: “In a comfortable setting by the Sea of Galilee, Jesus made a special post resurrection appearance to seven of the 11 apostles. Having returned to their former trade of fishing, the apostles had fished all night in vain…At dawn’s first light, they saw Jesus on the shore but didn’t recognize Him. When Jesus told them to cast their net on the right side of the boat; they brought in a large haul of fish. The spiritually perceptive John recognized that the stranger was Jesus! The impetuous Peter immediately swam to shore to be with Him. Jesus then fixed breakfast for them as they enjoyed fellowship together.”

Now let us join the setting in progress as Jesus is preparing to restore His servant Peter and reaffirm the other fishing disciples. This event as recorded by John truly serves to show Jesus’ compassion, power, longsuffering and grace.

We will examine our Anticipated Power Points. According to the Analytical Commentary by Butler, we have…

• The Miracle of Christ. St. John 21:1-14 - Part I (Last week)

• The Ministry of Peter. St. John 21:15-23 - Part II (This week)

NOTE: Because this is a two-week lesson, I will label them Part I and Part II.

Jesus’ Post-Resurrection Appearances Reaffirm His Disciples’ Ministry – Part II

LESSON OUTLINE

I. The Miracle of Christ. John 21:1-14

A. The meeting. vs. 1

B. The members. vs. 2

C. The mindset. vs. 3

D. The Master. vss. 4-14

II. The Ministry of Peter. John 21:15-23

A. Peter, Interrogated and Restored. vss. 15-19

After the serving of breakfast, Jesus now begins to interrogate the motives of Peter’s love in order to restore him back publicly to his ministry position! Jesus still had work for Peter and in Acts Chapters 1-2, we will note Peter standing and representing our Lord. But in order to give validity to his ministry, he needed to be publicly tested and restored, for he had publicly denied Jesus Christ (John 18:15-27). Remember beloved, “to whom much is given, shall much be required” (Luke 12:48).

1. In verses 15-17 Jesus, according to the Union Gospel Press Expositor and Illuminator, shared: “Now Jesus gave Peter three chances to declare his love for Him. Each time Peter responded with a positive yes, the Lord commissioned him anew to feed His sheep and lambs. The focus is never on our failure but on God’s forgiveness.” Beloved, the ministry of Jesus Christ is no place for double-mindedness. Thank Jesus for His grace and mercy, as He seeks our total commitment and integrity!

Peter, like many of us, must minister to the Lambs and the Sheep. One writer states, “Lambs represent the new babes in Christ and need foundational truth of redemption. vs. 15

My sheep must be fed focuses on the maturing sheep who must learn discipline or direction for maturity. vs. 16

My sheep in verse 17, refer to the power, love and compassion of the shepherd to restore the wandering sheep who has gone astray.” Even as Peter, Abraham, Moses, David and me!

2. In verses 18-19, Peter is further instructed in his restoration. Peter learns that as he follows Jesus’ ministry, the Lord tells him of his earthly demise! There was no question, verse 19 describes Peter’s death! Even as Jesus knew His own end that would glorify God, so Peter is told.

B. Peters inquiry rebuked. vss. 20-23

Peter questions the demise of John and Jesus quickly rebukes him. Literally, Jesus is saying that’s none of your business. Jesus then states that if it were His will for John to live forever, that God’s business and not man’s. As things often go, somebody put out incorrect news, that John will never die. Let us focus on the true words of Jesus and not rumors!

CLOSING

This week’s lesson closes with a great testimony that truly for itself, as John speaks in 21:24-25, “This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true. And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.”
