Missouri Pre-Service Teacher Assessment (MoPTA)

Missouri Pre-Service Teacher Assessment (MoPTA)

Lesson Plan Format

For the MoPTA, this Lesson Plan Format is an optional tool that can help a teacher candidate develop well-planned and structured lessons. This format also can help a teacher candidate better understand and design meaningful daily lessons that can positively enhance his or her instructional practice and students’ learning. This Lesson Plan Format is intended for use in conjunction with Tasks 2, 3, and 4, but again, it is not a required document.

Standards/Quality Indicators/Skills

Missouri and national standards, quality indicators, and skills addressed by this lesson

CC. 5.G.B.3-Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category.

CC.5.G.B.4- Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties.

Learning Objectives/Goals

The lesson’s objectives and learning outcomes appropriate for meeting curricular and student needs

Students will classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties by arranging shapes into a hierarchy on the

Promethean Board. Students will create a polygon hierarchy foldable from their knowledge of polygon relationships.

Assessment (type[s] of assessment used throughout the lesson)

Assessment(s) before, during, and after the lesson

Before-students will be assessed on their knowledge of polygons

During- students will be asked to come to the front of the class to arrange polygons on the Promethean board

After- students will create a foldable from their knowledge on the hierarchies of polygons

Lesson Structure and Procedures Sequence of events of the lesson elements.

(The before, during, and after the lesson, e.g., Engagement/Opening, Procedures, Guided Practice, Conclusion)

1.) We will first define the word category and explain how we use categories in our daily lives. We will tie music into this lesson by using

a music genre category activity.

2.) Students will review what they already know about polygons, a handout will be given of the polygons and they will be explained in detail.

Vocabulary, names of the polygons and their characteristics will be discussed and distributed. The students will be given a few minutes to

explore polygons that we see on a daily basis.

3.) Students will be asked for volunteers or the teacher will select students to come to the board, after the lesson to arrange the polygons

into the hierarchy based on their properties.

4.) The students will be asked to create a polygon foldable, the teacher will have an example for the students to see and step-by-step

directions will be handed out.

5.) Lead the students through the process to make the hierarchy foldable. Ask questions that lead them to use their foldable to answer.

6.) Once the foldable has been checked for structure, have the students fill in the polygons on their own. Tell them to use as much

creativity as possible.

7.) Review the hierarchies of polygons and discuss any questions that may come up. Display hierarchies in the room. Allow students to use

their creations on the test.

Instructional Strategies

Teacher approach to helping students achieve the learning objectives and meet their needs

Move around the room, or use a document camera while making the foldable so all students can see and follow.

Walk students through the hierarchy step-by-step; go back if they are unclear on something.

Learning Activities

Opportunities provided for students to develop knowledge and skills of the learning objectives

The students are asked to come to the board to manipulate the polygons.

Students will create a hierarchy foldable to be used throughout the year if needed.

Resources and Materials

List of materials used in the planning of and during the instruction of the lesson

Promethean Board

CD with songs

Handouts

Paper

Crayons, markers, etc.

Pencil

Finished foldable example

Technology

Instructional and/or assistive technology incorporated into the lesson to enhance instruction and student learning

Promethean Board

Music

Differentiation/Accommodations/Modifications/Increase in Rigor

To help meet the needs of all learners, learning differences, cultural and language differences, etc.

Music of a different language could be used.

You could have the foldable pre-made for students that struggle following directions.

Create hierarchies in different ways to help all learners understand.

Classroom Management

Strategies consistent with the learning needs of the lesson that also meet student behavior needs to help keep students on task and actively

engaged

Prepare the foldable for them to fill-in.

Walk around while they are folding or drawing to keep them on task.

Put students into groups to help each other.

Extensions

Activities for early finishers that extend students’ understanding of and thinking about the learning objectives by applying their new

knowledge in a different way

Have students create a hierarchy made of pictures of polygons that are found in the real world.

Follow-up to Today’s Lesson

Quick activity for review or building on today’s learning that will deepen student understanding and interconnect concepts (may be

incorporated tomorrow or throughout the unit)

Review the properties of polygons and the hierarchies again to show the relationships. Continue mentioning those relations when polygons are

used throughout the Geometry segment.

Additional Information

Any area or lesson component that may not have been covered by this format that you think is vital to include in this lesson

Make sure that you double check all ActivInspire pages to make sure they are working before the lesson.
