Week 01

BEFORE THE CLASS:

• PowerPoint to explain what GIS is ready.

• GPS Receiver with charged batteries.

• Send agenda for the day (image could be attached here)

• Have printouts for students to accomplish tasks in each website.

• Revise the lesson (Check websites are working)

DURING CLASS

• Administration

i.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

• Email Activity

i. Open email to see agenda

• Desktop

i. Create a subfolder “GIS” in the students personal desktop folder

• Emphasize that everything regarding this activity has to be saved here.

o Use Google earth to explore different landmarks in MO, USA and the World (Partners countries- Check Grand Canyon/ Amazon, African Mt Ranges, etc.)

o Use KanGIS Studentmapper to map student data about Pizza likings etc and see them in a realtime map.

o Look Realtime Satellite Telemtery Sites- and talk about migration patterns, behavior, etc. How this change in time (seasons & space)

o Ecoregions & Hotspots. Make students explore different regions of the earth and evaluate biodiversity. Make inquiry activities or Webquest for this. See (K. Kurz- Hotspot Environmental Unit)

o Explore USGS site for some other activities

• Online Mapping (Interactive, real-time, collaborative, static) Design inquiry for these websites.

TERRASERVER/ GPS Activity

Make sure you are in TERRASERVER WEBSITE

Make sure you have the activity sheet & Instructions.

Make sure you have PowerPoint opened and saved as (your first name-terraserver)

PART 1: Finding Places using Aerial Mapping

• Go to Advance Find> Address (Use terraserver’s webpage)

• Search for your:

- House (HOME) (Street, State and Zip code)

- Landmark of your choice (You’ll have to find the address in the web)

• Use Aerial Map option, and appropriate resolution option (1m-2m or other) to be able to see the place clear enough.

• Copy each image to a PowerPoint slide. Add the name and address of the place to the slide and outline where the place is in your Aerial map. (See PowerPoint for an example) If you can by clicking on the option INFO in the terraserver site you will get the image with the coordinates (Latitude and Longitude get this for your school/ center)

• Your PowerPoint should have 4 slides.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Why do you think having the date for the image is important?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PART 2: Using a GPS Receiver- Garmin GPS12

• Turn your GPS receiver ON by pressing the light bulb button.

• Now you will learn about some of the screen that the GPS- receiver will show you.

• The first screen that appears is your SATELLITE Screen. Complete the diagram below by adding the names of what you think each icon in the image mean or represent.

• Do the same with the following three screens. Toggle back and forth using PAGE and QUIT buttons from the GPS unit. (Use PAGE and QUIT buttons only)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Take a reading of the position of HHBGC with the GPS Unit.

3. Is the latitude and longitude correct compared to the Aerial Map found in terraserver? (Use a GPS- Global Positioning System)

|INFO. |GPS Unit Reading |Terraserver Reading |

(Note: Make sure that when you transfer the image from paint to PowerPoint you include the copyright information this is VERY IMPORTANT!!)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4-What area is covered by the circle? Use the formula: Pi x r2, where Pi = 3.14 and you’ll need to find the radius. How can you find the radius?

How did you find the radius?

Total Area covered by the circle?

Number of crimes per area?

Why do you think it is important to talk about crimes per area?

Week 6-7: Supplemental Activity

OUTLINE

- Explain what satellite telemetry is and how it works. (See PowerPoint)

- Proceed to activity Below- (See Resource Websites)

REALTIME MAPPING

1- Real-time mapping:

2 Choose an animal to work with for thin the following activity.

Stork watch-

URL:

Sea Turtle- Duke University

URL:

Hawk Watch-

URL:

Whale Watch

URL:

You will need to have a slide show presentation where you:

1 Have the website you are using

2 An image of the animal you are working with

3 Some basic information about the animal (Species name, habitat, feeding habits)

For example:

• Choose Satellite Telemetry Program> HERE (Migration route maps)

• Select one of the raptors for your project

• Get an image of your raptor, get a map for a relevant migration route

1. Why do you think it is useful to be able to gather information of animals using satellites?

2. Why would you think it is useful to share this information?

3. What other real-time information do you think might be useful for us to collect in a real-time basis using satellite technology? (Crime, Earthquake activity, active agents, tracking airplanes, ships, conservation, etc)
