MLA Annotated Bibliography

A bibliography includes works consulted during the research process that may or may not make it to the final works cited page. While you must have six sources for this annotated bibliography, the sources could change by the time of the final draft. You may decide to change them, or I may instruct you to do so. This assignment is very helpful because you will write your entries for your works cited page and get practice with annotating, which helps in the evaluation process. For this assignment, you will include your thesis statement at the top.

For an annotated bibliography, use standard MLA format for entries and citations. After each entry, add a brief abstract, including 2 to 4 sentences summarizing the main ideas of the source and 1 to 3 sentences to relate the article to your research and provide a critical description.

Basic MLA Format for an annotated bibliography

1. Hanging indents are required for entries in the bibliography, as shown below. That is, the first line of the citation starts at the left margin. Subsequent lines are indented ½ inch from the left margin. You can set your word processor to do this automatically. It is in the Paragraph menu when you right-click the page. It’s under the “Special” dropdown menu.

2. As with every other part of an MLA formatted paper, the bibliography is double-spaced, both within the citation and between them. Do not add an extra line between the sources.

3. The annotation is a continuation of the works cited entry. Do not drop down to the next line to start the annotation.
