IMPORTANCE OF ENGLISH, READING, AND WRITING – MLA ESSAY

DIRECTIONS: Type a well-developed MLA formatted essay (4 detailed paragraphs) including:

REMEMBER, you need to have 8-11 sentences MINIMUM for EACH paragraph.

*For this essay, it is okay to have a single sentence introduction and a single sentence conclusion. The focus skills are MLA formatting and details regarding #1-4 below.

1. Why taking English classes is so important. Four years of English are required to graduate from high school. Why do you think this is? Explain why. How does reading increase higher-level thinking and critical thinking skills, communication skills, and writing skills, etc.? How might this be helpful to you post-high school? Answers such as “it won’t” or similar are inadequate responses and will earn no credit.

2. Explaining why we read. Refer to class notes/discussion. (E.g.: Describe how messages in readings affected you, influenced you, or impacted you.)

3. Explaining how what we learn from literature and nonfiction can apply to ourselves and our everyday lives. (E.g.: Themes about life, life lessons, values, etc.)

4. Explaining why we write. Refer to class notes/discussion.

GRADING: In addition to content, you will also be graded on sequencing/organization, grammar and mechanics, and MLA format.

MLA FORMAT REMINDER: Typed, correct heading , double space, size 12 font, Times New Roman, black ink with proper header (upper right corner with last name and a space and a page # and same size and font as rest of essay), and correct title. SEE BELOW FOR CORRECT LINE SPACING IN WORD.
