Research Paper Editing Guide for MLA Formatting

1.    Does the student’s last name and page number appear in the top right hand corner of every page, including the Works Cited page? (If not, then please go to “View,” select “header and footer,” and then tab over to the right margin, and type your last name. Then in the pop-up box, click on the first # symbol. Close.) See example above!

2.    Does the paper meet the minimum length requirement? (4-7 pages)

3.    Is the entire paper double spaced (including the heading)? If there are any extra or fewer lines, then fix these.

4.    Are there 3-5 sources listed on the Works Cited page? If other sources are used in the paper, then these must also be cited on this page. Are all sources alphabetized?

5.    Look at the in-text citations (parenthetical documentation) within the paper. No citation should be the web address for a source. Are all listed by the author’s last name OR the first two important words in the title OR the organization/association/college/business name?

6.   Do you quote, paraphrase, or summarize at least three sources in your paper? Are these all correctly credited with in-text citations?

7.    If a comma appears within the parentheses or a p. or word "page" or something other than what should appear here, please delete it.

8.    For all titles that are located within parentheses in the in-text citations, please make sure that no author was given. Remember the priority for in-text citations: AUTHOR’S last name (if available) OR FIRST TWO important words in title (if available) OR NAME OF organization, association, college, or business sponsor of the website.

9.    If titles are within the parentheses, please make sure that they are either in quotations or underlined, according to the type of source it is. (Articles are placed in quote marks, longer pieces such as novels, movies, etc.)

10.    Make sure the sources used in the paper are GIVEN CREDIT and explained, and once again, be sure that all 3 sources are quoted or paraphrased within the paper at LEAST once.

11. BE SURE TO GIVE CREDIT FOR ANY INFORMATION YOU OBTAINED FROM YOUR SOURCES! (Remember that PLAGIARISM (not giving credit to sources) is grounds for a ZERO on this assignment and a referral to an administrator!)

12.    Look at the indentions on the Works Cited page. Does the first line of every entry stick out to the margin, and are any additional lines (2nd or 3rd lines) for each entry indented 5 spaces?

14. Is the entire Works Cited page double- spaced? Make sure nothing is single-spaced and that nothing is more than double spaced.
