Modern Language Association (MLA) Citation Maker

Use this sheet to record the resources you used for your research paper. This information will be used to create a Works Cited page. The headings in the grey boxes represent each element that is required for your citation and are listed, left to right, in the order in which these elements should appear. These headings are also properly punctuated and formatted according to MLA style. Use these headings as a guide to format your citation.

BOOKS IN PRINT

Use the title page to get the following elements. If no author is listed, you may use an editor or corporate authors (the organization that sponsored the work) name. If no author or editor is given, omit the author element and list this resource under the title of the book.

Enclose in double quotations.

Italicize; use proper capitalization.

Include only if noted.. (i.e. "2nd ed.")

Look for a header (typically found in large or bold print near the top of the article). If there is no header, use a generic description for the page (i.e homepage, online posting.) Enclose in quotations and only use if different from the title of the website.

The overall title of the website (not just the page that you found information on) Usually found on the home page of a website. Italicize; use proper capitalization.

This is the name of the organization or person that has published this web site. Many times found in the "contact us" or "about us" areas. If not found, use "N.p."

Look for the date of the last update - usually near the top or bottom of the page. If not available, enter "n.d."

List the format that the information is found.

The date you accessed the article: format as day, month and four digit year (DD Mo. YYYY)

If the URL of the page you used is very long, cite the URL of the Websites search page or home page. Enclose in < >.
