Compiling an MLA Works Cited Page

Steps to Compiling Your Works Cited Page

1. Your Works Cited list should come at the end of your paper on its own page.

2. Center the title Works Cited at the top of the page.

3. Maintain your page number heading on the Works Cited page.

4. Maintain double spacing on the Works Cited page.

5. Alphabetize your Works Cited entries by last name of the author. If there is no author, alphabetize by the first word of the title of the article (but ignore the initial A, An or The).

Steps to Compiling a Works Cited Entry

1. Figure out what type of source you are using.

2. Use your MLA Handbook to look up the type of source.

3. Follow the steps outlined in the Handbook to arrange the order of information in your citation.

a. Pay special attention to how to punctuate citations.

b. Also pay attention to when to use italics and quotes to designate titles.

4. If there is information missing from your source (such as page numbers or an author name), you generally leave that information out, but there are sometimes special instructions as to how to indicate missing information, so be sure to check the Handbook for any special instructions for your type of source.

5. Type out your citation as instructed.

6. Keep the first line of the entry justified all the way to the left of the page.

7. If the citation takes up more than one line, tab over the second and any subsequent lines.

Use your MLA Handbooks to write an appropriate MLA Works Cited entry for each of the following. Please compose your answers on the back of this paper.

1. The article was titled Land of the Surfing Hippos. It was published in August 2004 on page 100 in National Geographic. The author is Bill Pomo. National Geographic is a monthly magazine paginated by issue.

2. The article is titled Revolutionary Suicide in Toni Morrison’s Fiction, which was published in the African American Review in 2000 in volume 29, issue 34. The article was on pages 389-412. The author of the article is Nancy Snyder.
