Legend of the Week!

Cards’ Joel Davidson almost singlehandedly won this game for his team, as he played stellar defense and staked his claim as one of the premiere shortstops in Legends! First, he caught a tough pop fly, having to range deep in his position, then throw an absolute bullet to 1B, doubling up the potential tying run in the 8th to kill a Redleg rally. He did not stop there. Again with the Redlegs threatening – this time in the 9th with the winning run on second, a MLB popup was hit behind the second baseman. Clearly it would have been trouble for the shallow-playing second baseman, but Joel came all the way over from SS to make the catch and end the game! “I hate the father/son rule,” stated Redleg manager Petro, as the young Joel is the son of fellow teammate and proud father Keith. As for the player doubled-up at 1B, BobO is also part of a father-son deal. “I was just expecting the typical slow and older Card to field that ball, so I took my time getting back to the bag, but when I saw the missile coming back to 1B, I knew I was in trouble,” stated a humbled BobO Oliver. “ I promise to make it up to my team – perhaps bringing lunch to the double-header on Sunday,” he added.

Honorable Mention goes to fellow Card Jason Raczktiskticowsicoowlsklwili who pitched well under pressure to earn the save!

Game Summaries

Padre Perspective

On a beautiful, very early, Sunday morning at Lee HS, the Padres started their first winning streak of the season with a win over the Rebels.  Despite rumors of players drinking beer and eating Popeye's in the parking lot during the game, the Padres did not let it affect their play.  Once again, solid pitching was turned in by Tom Curtin and Mr. "Out-of-Town" himself - Jayson Putnam.  There were also many solid offensive performances, most notably Mike (2-3, BB) who continues to hit singles despite hitting fences and Jayson (3-5) who must be playing for a new contract because he's showing up each week.  The Padres have to feel pretty good about the last couple of weeks, but it will remain to be seen if these rumors cause a monumental October collapse.  In the meantime, pass me a biscuit.

Thunder Perspective

Thunder win 9-4!!!

The Thunder was able to pull off their first win of the season on Sunday despite having only 8 players. Thanks to the Expos for letting us borrow a right fielder, we were finally able to play a game. Thunder jumped out early and was able to put up 4 runs in the top of the 2nd. Great pitching once again by Jordan Klein held the Expos scoreless through 4 innings of work. Paul Conklin took over in the 5th with a comfortable 8-0 lead. After plunking 2 batters and a couple of failed pick off attempts Conklin single handedly gave up 4 runs over 4 innings and with no other options at pitcher, Jordan came out once again to close the door on the Expos in the 9th. The team as a whole hit well and we are happy to get our 1st regular season win in Legends.

Nationals Perspective

The Nationals returned to their winning ways beating the Hurricanes 16 – 8 after losing the previous week to the BlackSox. Several players must have hit the cages during the several weeks of rain, because our bats were hot, recording 15 hits, 4 Walks and 2 Hit Batters. Leading the charge was Chris 3 for 3, Rich 3 for 4, Bob S. 2 for 2, Bob V. 2 for 3 and Andrew G. 2 for 4.

National pitching was also key to the win; Rich, Andrew and DJ totaled 8 K’s, 8 hits and only 2 walks on the day. Andrew G. made his pitching debut with 2 solid innings, 2 K’s, 1 walk and only allowing 1 hit. Hopefully our pitching remains hot with two games next week. Big concerns with two star pitchers hurting arms this week. Remember to ice the shoulders this week.

Several key defensive plays were made during the game and only 2 errors (great for a Legends game).

Legend of the Week honors should go to Chris Herald going 3 for 3 (2 HR’s, a single and 1 BB).

BlackSox Perspective

A second weekend of team baseball in a row ended in another Blacksox victory. 4 different pitchers combined to put together a complete game shutout of the Firefighters. The staff was led by Dallas Anders (2 IP, 5Ks, and 1 base runner allowed) and Logan Willman (2IP, 3Ks, and not one runner allowed). The Blacksox plated 15 runs with contributions from Brian Stoutenburg (3 for 3, Double, 2 R, BB, SB), Jeff Cavano (3 for 4, 2 SB, 2 R), and Timmy Hodgens (2 for 3, BB, SB, 2 R). Defensively the Blacksox only committed one error on a wet and slippery field. Web Gems were turned in from Dallas Anders who had a diving catch in center and Brian Stoutenburg who picked out a short hop throw at first. This win was a total team effort.

Redlegs Perspective

The Cards got the best of the Redlegs in the latest round between the two bitter rivals.  Chris got the start and pitched 3 strong innings, giving up 1 un-earned run and picking up 4 K's before turning the ball over to the bullpen.  Petro pitched a near perfect 4th and 5th, but got hammered in the top of the 6th, surrendering 4 runs and the lead to pick up the loss.  Ryan kept the Redlegs in the game during the final 3 innings with a solid and steady performance.

The Cards pitching kept the Redlegs bats in check most of the game, despite a 4 run burst in the bottom of the 5th.  The Redlegs attempted a 9th inning comeback, reminiscent to last season's playoffs with a come from behind defeat of the Cards in 11 innings.  Unfortunately, the Redlegs failed this time around, stranding the tying run on 3rd base and conceding to the Cards 6 to 5.

Offensive standouts for the 'legs:

Ryan   1 for 1, R, 2BB, HBP, 3SB

Bob-O 2 for 3, R, RBI

Chris   2 for 4, RBI

Jeff      1 for 2, 2B, 2RBI, BB

Rich    1 for 3, R, RBI

Brian   1 for 3, R

Dino    1 for 4

Rebels Perspective

Don't recall the score...Although most Rebels continued to hit the ball well, the Padres hit the ball even better resulting in a more productive offense. Rebels pitching was challenged as Gordo left after 2 innings with some soreness, Mark Cowdin got himself into a serious jam in the 4th with 3 BB and a hit batter, but the damage was limited as Dave Narins came in to get two quick outs. Padres showed a late power fuselage providing permanent separation as they rocked Rebels closer Scott Day making him pay dearly for leaving ball up which evened the season series between the two powerhouse Legends teams at one game apiece...
