As snow and ice melt, they drain into landscaped areas or storm sewers, and then to natural bodies of water. What can we do to help?Shovel (or use a snow blower) before you use any product; never put a deicing product on top of snow. Adopt the “Just Enough” principle, putting down just enough product to keep high traffic areas clear of ice.Sweep up un-dissolved product after a storm is over for reuse.Consider switching to a non-chloride deicer.Support changes by your municipality to minimize salt usage. Talk with your neighbors about appropriate salt usage.Park Avenue ImprovementsResidents driving along Park Avenue will see street and drainage improvements underway this winter. Be on the lookout for construction vehicles and workers, and drive with caution as these exciting improvements begin this month!Be Ready for Winter Street Clearing When Snow is in the ForecastWith the snow season fast approaching we would like to remind all residents that have driveways to move all parked vehicles from the roadways and park them in their driveways prior to and during snowy weather.? Trucks will often be out 2-4 hours before the snow begins to fall, pre-salting all secondary streets. It can be very difficult to successfully maneuver an 8’ or 10’ snow plow around parked cars.? Parking cars in driveways will eliminate the chance of salt spreaders slinging salt into your car’s grill, into the wheel’s break area, or chipping the paint on your cars.? It also keeps the mirrors from being damaged.? So, to ensure a quicker response from snow plows, and eliminate the chance of your street not being plowed, please move all parked cars off city streets during snow removal operations. Municipal Park Grant Awarded to OaklandIn November of 2000, citizens all across St Louis County approved a new sales tax to help improve, restore and expand their municipal parks and recreation programs. As a result of their votes, the municipal park grant commission of St Louis County was formed and charged with keeping the promise made to taxpayers: To put their money to work where it counts - in the hearts of their communities. This year Oakland is thrilled to be a recipient of a Municipal Park Grant which will fund 2017 improvements in Minturn Park. Stay tuned for details of this exciting project!A LETTER FROM AMERENAs the song says, "Baby, It's Cold Outside!"? Ameren Missouri customers can reduce their heating bills by implementing energy-saving strategies.? Please share these tips with your friends and neighbors this winter.? Stay warm and safe out there with these energy saving tips to reduce your winter heating bills!Keep the thermostat at 68 degrees or lower this winter. You save about 3 percent on your heating costs for each degree you lower your thermostat.Use a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust the temperature of your home according to your family’s schedule – lowering the temperature when sleeping or away from home, and raising the temperature only as needed. Smart Thermostats can save up to 15% on your home's heating costs.? Take advantage of a $100 rebate when you purchase and install a new eligible smart thermostat.? Check out HYPERLINK " Energy Efficiency for details. ??Set water heater temperature to 120 degrees Fahrenheit for safety and energy savings. Lowering the setting of the water heater thermostat can save approximately 3 to 5 percent in energy costs. Heat pump water heaters are 2-3 times more efficient than standard electric models, and can save you almost $300 per year on energy bills.? Check out HYPERLINK " for details.Heat only rooms that need to be warmed by closing vents and doors to unused rooms.Adequately insulate your home, which can reduce energy usage by up to 30 percent. In the Midwest, experts recommend 9 to 15 inches of insulation in an attic.Keep drapes and furniture from blocking air vents.Use weather stripping and caulk to reduce air leaks. Pay special attention to walls, ceilings, windows and vents in the basement. Air leaks in the basement are less noticeable, but cost money.During the winter, ceiling fans should move warm air away from the ceiling and down to the floor, so they need to run at a low speed in a clockwise direction (as you look up at it). The room will be more comfortable and heating costs will be lowered. It costs only about $2 a month to use ceiling and other fans to circulate air.?Happy New Year!!!
