Project Introduction - Leeds School of Business

Project Outline for Leeds’ Mobile Apps Competition

Project Purpose

With the proliferation of mobile devices and the ability/desire to communicate 24/7 the Leeds School of Business has identified an opportunity to create mobile app(s) for use by its students and alumni. At the same time, this project creates a unique opportunity for Leeds students to get exposed to the design and development process for mobile apps. This is a resume building activity for participating student teams.

This project is intended to develop the mobile apps competition idea, including identifying all required resources, budget, and timeline.

Project Objectives

• Competition details are completed and approved by the appropriate Leeds Administrator (most likely the Dean) no later than October 21st,

• Five (or more) teams sign-up to participate in the spring mobile apps competition,

• Amount and sources of competition funding are identified (with a verbal commitment from at least one funding source to participate),

• Three training sessions are created and experts (one for each) are identified to run these sessions for competing teams during the spring semester,

• Competition files (hard and soft copies) are organized so that a future mobile apps organizing team can utilize these without assistance from this team.

Project Scope

In-Scope - Competition eligibility requirements, mobile application criteria, judging criteria, competition budget, sources of funding, competition schedule, team training schedule/expert presenters, marketing channels/materials and team sign-up.

Out-of-Scope – Running the competition (outside of initial team sign-up in the fall),

Deliverables

• Examples of at least three similar successful competitions (apps were developed and are being used)

• Competition eligibility requirements,

• Mobile application criteria (what constitutes a mobile app for purposes of this competition and define what is off limits)

• Competition judging criteria,

• Competition format (e.g. American Idol with voters other than judging panel weighing-in)

• Competition budget,

• Funding sources,

• Marketing materials,

• Sign-up instructions and forms,

• Training sessions and materials (minimum of an outline for each session) to help the teams with mobile apps design and development (focus on design). Group sessions and access to these experts for one-on-one feedback.

Project Approach

Students will start by researching best practices for mobile apps competitions (or other appropriate competitions). At the same time, they will identify/meet with local experts to help develop a model that can be successful, while developing local interest in the competition.

The students will be expected to meet with Dave Kohnke (or someone he identifies) on a bi-weekly basis to provide status updates, assistance with project roadblocks, and for feedback on project work. Dave will be used best to help knock down roadblocks, provide insight into technology platforms and systems that are available (unavailable) to the competing teams.

Critical Milestones and Event Dates

Competition research – Friday, September 16th

Draft of competition materials – Friday, October 7th

Final competition materials – Friday, October 21st

Competition sign-up kick-off – Tuesday, November 1st

Sources of funding identified – Friday, November 18th

Training materials and local experts – Friday, December 9th

Sources of and verbal commitment for competition funds – Thursday, December 15th

Roles & Responsibilities

See the course syllabus for insight into expectations for the student team. Students must go through Dave and/or his representative for any communications with the Dean. Students can contact other organizations who have run similar competitions and local experts as they deem appropriate and necessary.

Students will be expected to develop a more detailed roles and responsibilities document, including identifying a project manager and individuals responsible for each of the key project areas (research, competition materials, funding, and training).

Dave Kohnke and his team can be expected to respond to student requests within three business days. Students will be expected to identify other needs they will have of Dave’s team at the beginning of the project (wherever possible) so that these assignments can be scheduled

Quality Considerations

See the course syllabus for more details on what constitutes quality work. Achieving the stated objectives will be used as a key reference point for measuring project quality.

Assumptions

• Funds will be available to hire two part-time computer science students to do the initial development of the mobile apps platform

• Competition timeline will be kept relatively short in duration both to drive competition intensity and to take into account the fact that students would procrastinate anyway if given an extended timeline to complete their design

• Competition will be idea and design of mobile applications, and will not include any development
