In hunting tonight through 1913 & 1914 for a loan of $10,000 WITH C.H. Seaton on which I did not find, I find in the flap pocket of cash acc't book N, the leaves from the Shearer Bible which was sent to me by a Miss Shearer & which I was to return, but can't find to whom. A young fellow came for them several times, but I did not then know I had them, but later found them. I presume I copied them somewhere, but am not sure & can copy them here quicker than to make the search, so I will copy them now & be ready if called on to return the papers.

I make the start tonight, late though it is, to transcribe on this book & at the proper places in book 5 of the records taken on my 50 days trip west from which I returned three weeks ago tonight viz on Oct 21 (having left home Sept 2) & have been too busy with accumulated matters to take the matter up.

When I got to Vincennes, Ind abt 1 AM Oct 2, 1921, I inaugurated such a strenuous campaign in my efforts to ferret out the descendants of great grandmother Mary Markle (nee Rotharmel), brother John Rotharmel & at places where ink & conveniences were not available for writing in my book, Record No 5 which I had along & it becoming apparent that there were not enough blank pages to make all entries, I took what I gleaned down by pencil & will now transcribe, using dates when taken.

Vincennes, Ind Oct 2, 1921 7 AM

The latest Directory I could get was "R.L. Polk & Co, Vincennes City Directory for 1916-1917" from which I found:

Carrithers, Mary E. (widow of Samuel) h. 26 E. St Clair

Jack, none, Kilgore, none, Markle, none, Redburn, none

Rodarmel, Otis (Mae) tester Vincennes Milk & Ice Cream Co h 211 W. St Clair.

Rodarmel, Wm A. (Sarah) H. 319 W. Eberwine Ave

It gave Knox Co land owners as follows:

Rodarmel, Elizabeth 70 A $950 P.O. address Monroe City, Ind

Rodarmel, M.F. 50 A $1320 P.O. address Wheatland, Ind

Roadarmel, Marshall 12 A $440, P.O. address Vincennes, Ind RR3

In a telephone Directory of this year for Vincennes, Briceville, Decker, Frichton, Monroe City, & Wheatland, I find under:

1. Frichton

* John Rhodarmel Tel 4-0

2. Monroe City

Chas Rodarmel farm Tel 821

Robert Rodarmel farm Tel 901

*John Rodarmel told me when I went out to his home, that Rev John S. Rodarmel, Preacher, lives almost opposite the residence of his son, Otis of 211 West St Clair St & is aged abt 60. Also that John A. Roadarmel lives at Wheatland in the town also aged over 60. He also said that Joseph Roseman, a first cousin of Mr R's father, lives near Bussion St at 1121 Broadway, Vincennes, an old Soldier & well informed.

V6 Page 4

John J. Rodarmel said his sister Anna Smith (widow of John Smith) lived abt 4 miles out of Vincennes on the Main St Road on a farm. Lives in a little frame house on right hand side of road, their [sic] being a small house almost opposite on the left hand side.

Also, John J's sister, Mary, wife of Abe Westfall lived out the Hart St Road fr Vincennes abt 4 1/2 miles, lives off the Main Road & have to go by Jno J's other sister Hattie Williams' to get there. She lives on her father's old home farm. Lives abt a mile from Church above John J's, but their [sic] is no good auto road across.

Also, sister Minnie McCormick, wife of Ed McCormick lives South of Vincennes go out Evansville Road a good long ways, or could go from Anna Smith's to her place. Also, a younger sister, Lulu Slow, wife of Thomas Slow lives on the Hart St road. When you get 3 miles out to a big Catholic Institution, turn there to the taking the gravel road & follow it to a schoolhouse & right at the S.H. turn square to the left & right where you make the turn, back of the school house is where Lulu Slow lives. Also, brother Marshall lives near to Hattie Williams. Just up the road a short distance & he might give information. The church just above John J's near Frichton is the Palmyra Pres Church. John J's father was a Cumberland Presbyterian at Herron Pres Ch near his home. He had the papers of the church when

V6 Page 5

he died & was probably clerk of the Session. John J. belongs to Indiana Pres Ch where his father is buried. To go to Indiana Pres Ch, go straight across from here (Jno J's) at church until you (quit 11 Pm 11/11/21) (11/12/21 9:17 [can't read AM or PM]) strike a gravel road 1/4 to 1/2 mile & then turn to left & go 3/4 miles & turn square to right & keep right on straight to the church & take another gravel road in front of church (come back & turn to left on gravel road) & then keep on gravel until you come to crossroads at another gravel road & turn there to the left & then follow that gravel road until you strike another gravel road & turn square to the left again & come back & it will be up a little hill & make a turn to left at a house & next house will be Cannon's on right hand side of road. Cannons will tell how to get to Westfall's & they can direct to next closest place to go to.

Mr John J. Rodarmel produces his grandfather's old Bible, being the Bible Apocrypha & New Testament printed in Phila Pa by M. Carey No 121 Chestnut St in 1814. The family record is between the Bible & Apocrypha & includes record of Mr R's father's family, as well as that of his grandfather's family.

I have made a genealogical tree of the family on Pages 448 & 489 Book 5 in which I have incorporated the dates, but I will give here also the full record of the entries in the Bible:

"Nancy Rodarmel was born Jany 5, 1793

Then follows record of births of the children of Abraham & Nancy Rodarmel:

Two of above 13 children died young viz:

"Lizzie Rodarmel died May 16, 1867

From an obituary notice J.J. showed me of his father, I copy salient points as follows:

James M. Rodarmel, a pioneer citizen, worked in his cornfield all day Monday, Nov 9th, although 78 yrs of age, doing a young man's work & died Monday night, shortly after midnight at his home in Johnson Tp (but the farm is a little bit in Harrison Tp) after an illness of just one week. V6 Page 11

At residence of Joseph & Phila Burch Cannon, Johnson Tp, Knox Co, Indiana Oct 2, 1921 4:55 PM

Mrs Cannon says one of her aunts (her mother's sister) married a Williams & she also says that her grandmother, Nancy Roadarmel, after the death of Abraham Rodarmel, her first husband, married for her second husband, Abraham Westfall, but thinks she had no issue by him & says she can just remember her grandmother, who she thinks survived Westfall.

Manerva, the fifth child of Abraham Rodarmel, married Wm H. Pea & Edward Pea, their son has their family Bible. He lives abt 10 miles out of Vincennes on the Main St road near Iona on right hand. You turn down a road 1/4 of a mile. She thinks Mary, 7th child of Abraham & Nancy, died young.

Indiana, 8th child, she thinks she was the one who married the Williams & that his name was John (She is wrong in both as she died aged 11 see page 489 Book 5 & his name was not John)

The Nancy A. McMillen Born Aug 5, 1837 died Apr 14, 1879 & was never married. Her mother was a sister of Mrs Cannon's mother viz Rachel, see page 488 book 5.

They gave me their own family record viz:

Phil Burch Pea born Oct 16, 1854 Joseph Cannon born Sept 16, 1850

They were married Apr 3, 1890 & their only child:

1. Cora Alberta Cannon was born Jany 6, 1892.

V6 Page 12

At residence of Abe J. Westfall, Johnson Tp, Knox Co, Ind Oct 2, 1921 5:53 PM

Mrs Westfall says her father's name was James Markle Rodarmel. She further says that her father told her that his sisters, Mrs McMillen & Mrs Williams both died soon after marriage & thinks that Mrs McMillen died soon after Nannie's birth (Nannie was the only child) (It was two days after, see Book 5 Page 488) and she was taken & raised by Mrs Pea. Mrs Westfall thinks Nannie's McMillen's mother was Caroline Frances for the reason that she has always understood that her oldest sister was named for Nannie's mother. She also thinks it was Indiana who married Williams & he had but one child (wrong in both evidently) Thornton Williams & he had one son Leroy Williams who went to the Northern part of this State. He was a telegraph operator. She says her grandmother before marriage was Nancy Hanna & her sister was the mother of Joseph Roseman of 1121 Broadway, Vincennes, Ind, just below the RR two or three houses. She also says that the father of the Washington Ind. Rodarmels was first cousin to her father. His son, John, has died, leaving a widow in Washington, Ind, who might know. Another set took in Marcellus & Charles, now dead, whose father was also a first cousin of James M. Rodarmel. Mrs Westfall says her oldest sister, Caroline Frances ("Fannie") Farris, wife

V6 Page 13

of Isaac Farris a watchman where the trains pass & whose married daughter Norma is telegraph operator, lives in Patoka, Gibson Co, Ind.

Mrs Westfall has given me record of their family as follows:

Abe J. Westfall was born Jany 20, 1868. Mary Rodarmel was born Oct 10, 1867.

They were married May 2, 1897 & their children are:

1. Oscar Elmer Westfall, born Dec 16, 1895

2. Morris James Westfall, born Apr 17, 1897

3. Agnes Marie Westfall, born Feby 18, 1899

4. Ruby Mae Westfall, born Apr 10, 1901

5. Infant Westfall, born Sept 1902

6. Alma Rachel Westfall, born Aug 20, 1903

7. Mary Margaret Westfall, born Apr 17, 1905

8. Cora Alberta Westfall, born May 2, 1908

9. James Abraham Westfall, born Mch 4, 1912

In an old Bible record that Mrs West fall has

I. Carline Frances Rodarmel's birth is give as Apr 3, 1812. IV. Rachel Rodarmel was born July 2, 1818.

Mrs Westfall now thinks this was Nannie McMillen's mother as Mr McMillen married again & named his oldest daughter by his 2d wife Rachel for Nannie's mother. McMillen's moved to Marion Co, Indiana. She don't know where Mrs McMillen was buried, but never was any marker up at Indiana Church but thinks she was buried there.

IX. James Markle Rodarmel born Oct 11, 1829 (written by himself)

X. Nancy A. Rodarmel born July 27, 1831

V6 Page 14

Indiana Rodarmel died July 28, 1838

Rachel Rodarmel (McMillen) died Aug 7, 1837

Nancy Ann McMillen was born Aug 5, 1837. She was daughter of Rachel just above who died when Nannie was two days old.

John Hanner Pea, son of William H. & Minerva, his wife, was borned [sic] May 28, 1840.

Abraham Westfall was born Aug 1, 1781. His first wife was Polly by whom he had two sons, James Scott Westfall & John Westfall. He married the widow Nancy Rodarmel & he died before she did. After he died, she came & made her home with her daughter, Minerva Pea.

Mrs Westfall says her father was a young boy when his mother married Abraham Westfall, who was always good to him who set him plowing which he pushed along & finished. He was only a little boy, waist high when his father died.

I notice from a letter head Mrs Westfall gave me that her husband, Abe J. Westfall is a director & is Sec'y of Farmers Home Insurance Co of Knox Co, Ind, established 1895. It is now 7 Pm & pitch dark & I am leaving. Mr Westfall said his father's name was Abraham Westfall & he put J. in his name to keep his father from getting his letters.

I then went across the fields or a by road to the adjoining farm to the home of

V6 Page 15

Hattie Williams, the youngest of the 13 children of James M. Rodarmel, in Johnson Tp.

"This was her father's old farm & she had a record of

Marriages viz:

1. James M. Rodermal & Harriet S. Johnson Oct 22, 1856

2. John J. Rodarmel & Anne L. Barckman Apr 3, 1881 by Rev McComb

4. John F. Smith & Annie G. Rodarmel Nov 25, 1885 by Rev Dr Fisk

5. Marshall Rodarmel & Eunice Barckman Jany 27, 1891 by Esqr Jackson (Mr W. says she was a sister of John's wife.)

11. James O. Williams & Harriet Rodarmel Dec 31, 1908 by Rev Bennett

12. Lillie Rodarmel & Lyman Donovan in Nov______by Rev Boring

She died Apr 19, 1920 leaving 7 children:

1. Harriet, 2. Maurice, 3. Goldie, 4. Lillian, 5. Flossie, 6. Ralph, 7. Donald. All at home with their father who lives in Johnson Tp. I did not get to his home to get record of births & their marriage.

V6 Page 16

Mrs Williams has just one child:

1. Jennie Olive Williams born Dec 14, 1909.

Mrs Williams said her father told her that his mother didn't treat him right in that she never told him anything about his father, family or people. She & Mr W say that her grandmother's name before marriage was Hannah. Mrs Williams says Mrs Minerva Pea had some old records & Bible that were burned up when Mrs Williams was a little girl. This may have been the John Rotharmel Bible. She probably getting her grandfather's Bible & her brother James M. getting his father's bible.

Harriet Sloo Rodarmel died Mch 30, 1892 aged 53 yrs 9 mo 16 days. She was named for the grandmother of Thos E. Sloo who married Mrs Williams' sister Lulu May.

The o. in Mr Williams' name is for Oliver. Her Uncle Robt G. Johnston aged abt 76 was sick abed with rheumatism, but I saw him for a few minutes. I left Mrs Williams at 8:30 Pm in the rain & sent direct to Vincennes.

At Joseph Roseman's 1121 Broadway Vincennes, Indiana, Oct 3, 1921 9:07 AM

Mr Roseman says his mother, Minervah Hannah was a sister of Nancy Hannah Rodarmel. Thinks his brother was oldest. She died after the Civil War of old age. He says James M. Rodarmel told him that his

V6 Page 17

father, Abraham, was in the Rev. War (a mistake, I think) & gave him his name for the purpose of putting up markers but as he couldn't get the State from which he went, they couldn't get it up.

Joseph Roseman, my informant, was born June 22, 1839. His Uncle John B. Hannah died at Petersburg, Indiana. Mr Roseman don't remember James M. Rodarmel's sister, Mary, nor his brother, John Thornton, nor his sister Caroline Frances, but does remember Thornton Williams as some of the Williams appeared to get a share in his Uncle John B. Hannah's estate. He, Jose Roseman, has had charge of the soldiers monumental affairs since 1869 & has put up 1384 markers etc. Mrs Hannah (I don't remember who this refers to) born in Pgh, came here 50 yrs ago. Her father, Andrew Baird was born in Chambersburgh Pa when his father, Andrew Baird was on his way from North of Ireland to Western Penna. I am leaving at 9:33 Am. I then went in same neighborhood to

Residence of Mrs Frederick M. Mail

She is the youngest child of Minverva Pea & said her name was Cora Hebbard Pea born Aug 21, 1859 & married on Apr 3, 1881 to Frederick Marlin Mail who was born Jany 15, 1842 & died Aug 12, 1920 without issue. I left at 10 AM & went across to the Court House. It is 10 PM [the rest of this margin note telling what time JVT quits transcribing for the day is unreadable]

Soon after marriage, settled in Harrison Tp. His father was a farmer & carpenter & operated an old fashioned whipsaw. He died in 1833. Mr Rodarmel was not at home but his wife was & several of the children just returning from school. She gave me their family record as follows:

His home is on a little elevation & is a fine location. His

V6 Page 23

wife was going down in the field for the cows & he came up from the field with three horses abreast. He is a large fleshy fine looking young man & is, I believe, a son of Marshall Rodarmel & so far as I can now see is the only child. I think he told me so, but I have not recorded it. He gave me:

Robert Rodarmel was born May 23, 1891 & married on Sept 11, 1911 Mabel Kirk who was born Jany 16? 1891. Their child:

1. Paul M. Rodarmel was born Oct 24, 1916.

I got this from him out in the barnyard & left at 5:08 Pm (9 Pm Nov 15, 1921) (It is now 1:17 AM Nov 15th, & I go to bed) we then motored on to Wheatland & found in a small frame house with a room or two full of unkempt children, John A. Rotharmel, who knew very little about his family, not even knowing the name of his grandfather, where we arrived at 5:50 PM. He said his father's name was John Buzan Rodarmel who served 1 yr & 2 weeks in Civil War going from Knox Co, Ind & that he was a farmer & died on a farm in Steen Tp Dec 2, 1889 aged 64 yrs. He had a brother who died of small pox in the Civil War. John B. married 1st Mary Burris by whom he had:

V6 Page 24

He thought Marcellus was 2d cousin of his father.

Marcellus, Charles, William & John were brothers & all are dead but William. Said William lived on Burnett in Harrison Tp abt 4 miles from here & he proposed going with us as it was now dark to take us to where William lived.

We went first however, to residence in Wheatland of the widow of Marcellus.

At Residence of Mrs Marcellus Rodarmel, Wheatland, Knox Co, Ind Oct 3, 1921 6:22 PM

Mrs R. said her husband's father was Friend Rodarmel & that her husband's name was: Marcellus Friend Rodarmel Born Dec 17, 1860 & who died Aug 29, 1917. He married on Aug 25, 1881 Mary Ida Williams, my informant, who said she was born May 10, 1864 & their children are:

V6 Page 25

III. Sarah Myrtle married Elijah Scott & have children: 1. Royal & 2. Darling.

IV. Dovie married Theodore Myers & has three children: 1. Lillian, 2. Hubert, & 3. Crystal.

Mrs R's son, Rebert, I believe the youngest, came in & reported that they were working on the roads up by Wm A. Rodarmel's, but he thought he could cite us through & I never experienced any worse piloting in all my life, leaving our auto at a farm house & going through tall wet grass briars, burrs, & weeds for over a mile & then came to a creek with high banks on each side where a dredge boat was at work scooping out the creek for a depth of 10 to 15 feet & dumping the slippery mire on the bank which we had to wade through in the dark & then with wet slippery feet, walk a gang plank to get on the boat & the same difficulty to get off on the other side & then a quarter to a half mile's walk through pitch darkness to Wm A. Rodamel's who had gone to bed, but we called him up, he was living there alone so that at last, we found ourselves.

At Residence of William Amiziles Rodarmel in Harrison Tp, Knox Co, Indiana Oct 3, 1921 at 8:11 PM. [There are margin notes that indicate the time JVT stops & starts this transcribing, but the copy is too dark to read.]

Mr Rodarmel says he was born in Clay Co Illinois & when 18 moved

V6 Page 26

back to Daviess Co, Ind on the old home farm. He says Joseph Rodarmel was born in Penna & went from Pa to Crab Orchard Ky & from there to a farm (the Old Bill Welton farm) near Vincennes, Ind & the Indians were too thick for him & he then went back to Crab Orchard, Ky. While he lived on the Welton place, his first wife died. From Ky, he came to Daviess Co, Ind & settled there buying 80 Acres from his brother-in-law Edwards. He died in 1843 aged 81 or 82 yrs. He died in Veale Tp, Daviess Co & is buried at Bethel, a Methodist Church. There used to be a sandstone marker with his birth & death on it, but thinks it was knocked down. It was in the old part right across the road from the church. The church is about 5 miles south of East [best guess]. He was single when he first came to Indiana &

married 1st a Miss Van Kirk from Ky (never heard her first name). She died in Palmyra Tp

married 2d Nancy Twigger, a widow whose maiden name was Edwards, a sister of the man he bought the farm from, probably his name was Abe.

He died in 1843, three yrs before Mr R was born & she died 6 or 7 yrs later say in 1849 or 1850 & is buried at Bethel. She weighed 300 lbs. He thinks the 1st wife was buried at one of the Indiana Pres Church graveyards.

By his first wife, he had two children:

V6 Page 27

1. Sarah, Old Dr Roseberry took her to raise & she married his only son.

He lived at Pana, Ill & died there when Mr Rodarmel was young. Thinks it

was about all of 40 yrs ago that she died & thinks she was then fully 75

yrs of age. She died at Pana, Ills. She had 4 children. Wm A.R.

visited them in 1866 & one of the sons was a traveling man or a lumber

man. One of the children was dead, & a daughter was then married.

2. John, He married a Barbour? Don't remember seeing him. He died at Old London, Daviess Co & is buried at Bethel. Says there is no marker. He was comparatively a young man when he died & left a daughter named Huldah (see line 23)

By second wife, Joseph Rodarmel had:

3. Minerva, the oldest, who married Wm Rogers of Daviess Co

(Huldah, above, married Bill Summers of Pana, Ills. Her Aunt Sarah raised her. W.A.R. says they never had any children) They had two sons, Amos & Friend Rogers. Amos married Louisa Colbert & they had one Child, Minerva. Amos, Louisa & Minerva are all buried at Walnut Grove, a Methodist g.y.

Minerva married

1. Dave Heroitt

2. Jacob Hicks

Had children by 1st husband, but none by 2d.

V6 Page 28

Friend Rogers went to Iowa 60 yrs ago or more & was never heard of afterwards. Was single when he went.

4. Nellie, married Joel Strong, a farmer, in Pike Co, Ind. Both dead. She buried in Bethel & he in Pike Co at Union Chapel. Had two children, John Strong & Joe Strong, both dead.

Joe went in The Civil War, returned home to Indiana & left shortly thereafter & went to Kansas & was never heard from until abt 8 yrs ago, through his wife, who he had left behind applying for a pension & the Dept at Washington D.C. informed her he was drawing it himself. She had married here again & he married out there & raised a large family by his wife out there. Had no children by his first wife. He died 4 or 5 yrs ago. After he was found, his brother, John, went out to Kansas to see him. John Strong was also an old soldier of the Civil War & married Ann Davenport & had one child, a girl. She is dead, unmarried. Thinks he & wife are buried at Union Chapel or Otwell, Pike Co.

5. Findley, died unmarried & W.A. thinks it was when he was a small boy as he cannot recollect him. He went insane caused by a limb falling on him.

6. Allen, he married Polly Black & had a big family, lived in Pike Co near Otwell

V6 Page 29

which was their P.O. address & W.A. thinks they are buried at Otwell. They had children:

1. James, died in Kansas & "left a right smart family"

2. Joe, died in Pike Co, was married

3. Lizzie, married John Richardson & lived in upper end of Pike Co next to DuBois Co. Wm A. doesn't know about children as it has been 43 yrs since he was there. She is dead.

5. Perry Rodarmel, Don't know what became of him was married 4 or 5 times.

6. Elijah, don't know about him. Was in Indianapolis. Was married twice. Don't know about children as I haven't seen him for 40 yrs.

7. Wm Friend Rodimel lives in Petersburg, Pike Co, Ind, where he is a dealer in Real Estate & livestock, with office on Fourth & Main St Tel 27, aged abt 50. Wm A. thought married twice & had 2 children by 1st wife who he married in Kansas. Reach Petersburg fr Washington by train.

7. Friend Sears Rodarmel, named for a preacher, a Methodist, he supposes as his grandfather was a Methodist.

V6 Page 30

Wm A. don't think his grandfather had a Bible record. Says his father Friend S. was born in 1805 in Veale Tp, Daviess Co, Ind. He bought the other heirs out & lived there all his life. Except three years & died & is buried at Mt Olive in Veale Tp, a Cumberland Pres Ch. He died Apr 30, 1870. He married Huldah M. Horrell. Wm A. didn't know about Abraham's family, brother of his grandfather, Amos, also brother of his grandfather Joseph, lived in Steen Tp, Knox Co, Ind & was a farmer but Wm A. Don't recollect of ever seeing him. Thinks it probably that the Sarah of whose family Sam A. Rodarmel wrote in 1838 might have been his widow.

Neither Wm A. or John A. know of any children of Amos except John B., the father

V6 Page 33

of John A. Except the brother mentioned on page 23 lines 28 & 29 this book who died of smallpox in the Civil War.

Mr & Mrs Whitelock. They have a grandson or great grandson, a local Methodist preacher named Peck 50 or 60 yrs ago living at Bicknell, Knox Co, Ind. He is married. His P.O. address w'd be Bicknell, Ind. Says 50 or 51 yrs ago, was here on a visit from someplace in Illinois.

Wm A. says his grandfather, Joseph Rodarmel was a Methodist preacher or exhorter after he quit being bad. Said he was a Holy Terror when a young man. After he went back to Crab Orchard Ky, he quit his bad ways. Vincennes was an old French town & they had many & bad fights. Says his grandfather was 6 ft or 6 1/2 ft tall & a powerful, strong man &his father, Friend Sears Rodarmel was 6 ft 2 inches tall. He thinks his grandfather was in the Revolutionary War. Their Children were:

1. Infant son born dead Jany 6, 1897

she being the only red haired one among the children. Mrs Sloo says her mother & Tom's mother both had red hair. She further says that her Uncle McMillen's name was Jim & by his 2d wife, he had a daughter & a son Jim & also a daughter Rosy. They moved to Michigan & their children are there. He is dead. She says her grandfather, Abraham Rodarmel is buried at Indiana Pres Church. Children all single, three are away at work & the others in school. It is now 10:11 AM & I am leaving & proceeding to her brother's.

At residence of Marshall Rodarmel in Harrison Tp, Knox Co, Ind Oct 4, 1921 10:33 AM.

Marshall Rodarmel was born Oct 18, 1860

V6 Page 35

He married Eunice Barckman, sister of his brother John's wife & daughter of Wm Barckman. She was born Oct 12, 1865 & died Nov 13, 1918 & is buried in Vincennes.

Their children are:

1. Robert D. Rodarmel born May 23, 1891

2. Ruth Marie Rodarmel born Dec 29, 1893. She married on Nov 18, 1914 to Royal Nugent who was born Dec 25, 1895. They have separated & have no issue. Ruth is my informant & is keeping house for her father. She is a handsome brunette. It is now 10:42 AM & I am moving on to see Frederick Reel who is in his 88th yr & lived with his son-in-law?

At Charles Decker Cantwell's Vincennes Tp, Knox Co, Ind Oct 4, 1921 10:55 AM

Mr Frederick Reel in his 88th yr, well preserved & with a keen active mind, lives here. I believe Mr Cantwell is his son-in-law. He, Reel, says the River Duche' (Johnson's 1868 Atlas has it "Deshee River") is abt 1 1/2 miles from here at its head. The old Abraham Rodarmel farm in Harrison Tp was nearer to it, only abt 3/4 of a mile away & you could stand in his front door & see a long stretch of the River. He says Abraham Westfall married Abraham Rodarmel's widow. Mr Reel said in 1829, his father, Aaron Reel married Asenath Gothner & the date is on the record at the Court House. Thinks Court House burned down & destroyed some records, perhaps a room or two. Kizzie Westfall Col married Jack Walter, their son Wesley lived to be 100.

V6 Page 36

Mr Frederick Reel says he was born Aug 28, 1834 & when he was past seven, his mother died. He says his grandfather, David Reel, came here fr North Carolina in 1801 & built a log house 1 1/2 miles from here. He says in the Summer of 1841 (he thinks it was) he was at Abraham Westfall's & got apples out of his orchard & he was living then.

He says Thornton Williams went to school with him & was about same size, but Thornton was a little bit older than him & his father's name was Thomas. I think he said Thornton had the Winter fever & was tapped before his marriage & wore a rubber tube to control matter. He say Thornton's father went off west with a bad woman & left Thornton & his mother & some girls. He thinks Mary was the name of one of the girls & she or one of the girls married a Setzer, a cousin of Uriah Setzer, who married Jane Gilmore, a sister of Mr Reel's wife. She (that married a Setzer) lived at Merom, Sullivan Co, Ind & thinks two of her sons are living there now. He says Thornton Williams died about 20 yrs ago on the old Tom Williams place, afterwards Spaulding Rogers place where they kept old broken down show horses, was called old Show farm, on Wilson Creek. He was probably buried at Hamlin Church near where he lived or at Hermon [Herron?] Church. The upper Indiana Church is on the Bruceville Road. He can't recall who Thornton's wife was or when his mother died. It is now 12 o'clock noon & I move on.

To waft one soft sweet gentle spheric strain

To Nannie dear among the blest

Dearly beloved one, we have lain thee to rest,

In the old Churchyard we have made thee a tomb

We have granted thy last & dying request

And bore thee back to thy dear native home

Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord

From henceforth: yea saith the Spirit?

That they may rest from their labor:

And their works do follow them"

3. Mary S. daughter of W.H. & M. Pea Born June 30, 1842 Died Jany 3, 1858.

At residence of Caroline Frances Farris Patoka, Gibson Co, Indiana Oct 4, 1921 3:55 PM

Mrs Farris says she was named for her cousin, Caroline Frances Pea & her mother's sister, Frances Connelly nee Johnston. She says her father's oldest sister was Caroline Frances, but she don't remember her. Says she don't remember but thinks she died when she was very small, or possibly before she was born. She said that before she was married, someone came to their home asking her father what his grandmother's maiden name was, but he didn't know. Asking her if she ever heard her father say

V6 Page 40

what his grandfather Rodarmel's name was, she answered: "It wasn't John was?" I said: "That is what I think it was". She then said: "I do too & I feel very sure that is what he told me it was." She is sure it was John. She says her father said he was 12 yrs old when his mother married Abraham Westfall which wd make it 1841. Has heard her father speak a good deal of the folks over in Daviess Co & he spoke of their living up about Otwell which is in Pike Co. Recalls hearing her father speak of Aunt Sally Marshall & it was for her that her brother Marshall was named. She don't know whether she was an Aunt on his father's or mother's side. Says she has heard her father speak of relatives in Pgh. She thinks cousins called McLaughlin. She said her Uncle John Thornton Rodarmel died when young. She thinks both of the John Thorntons did. She said the Williams who married her Aunt was a brother of Governor Williams of this State whose name she thought was James D. She remembers seeing Thornton Williams but not his mother, but recalls that he had a sister Mary. She says James O. Williams died a few years after marriage. Has been dead abt 12 yrs & his father, James Williams is living in Vincennes. Thinks he was not related to Thornton. She remembers seeing Thornton Williams' wife, but don't know what her name was. Never knew of any children but

Arthur Richardville, my chauffeur of the past three days, said his father's name was William & his grandfather, Paul Richardville, & he drove round by his father home (he is 65) to show it to me & where his grandfather Paul was born. He said a younger brother of his grandfather, Toussaint Richardville now away up in the 90's was the oldest man in Vincennes & he showed me his one story home as we entered the French section coming in.
