Students immersed themselves in the history, culture, and political economy of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Peru through regular online discussions of current news for each country, films from the cultural cannon of the region, and virtual meetings with professionals working for a variety of companies in each region. The course concluded with a 2.5-day residency in St. Louis to synthesize the students observations, develop frameworks for understanding a country’s political economy based on its history and geography, and a methodology for understanding how businesses adapt their busines models to the context of a particular country.Opportunities and Challenges of the Global Economy10-day field-study in Beijing and Shanghai, China for Olin EMBA students. Gives students a first-hand experience with international, private-domestic, and State-owned-domestic companies operating in China. Course requires students to practice learning about key cultural and institutional elements in new and unfamiliar contexts and adapting operating, management, and marketing strategies to these contextual details.China National Health Commission Training Program on Precision Health Care and Translational MedicineA custom program for senior (Vice-presidents and Presidents) hospital administrators working for leading Chinese medical centers. The program combined daily on-site meetings with health care professionals at Washington University’s medical center to observe state-of-the-art cancer treatment and patient care. Each hospital visit was also paired with half-day workshops with Olin Business School faculty to help the participants understand the management, leadership and teamwork skills needed to provide these services. Critical Thinking and Impactful Communication – ICE CompetitionA team-based case competition serving as a capstone and integrating element to the full-time MBA core curriculum. Student teams worked on two separate case challenges, the first focusing on a new venture and the second focusing on a new product idea for an established multinational company. Teams received intensive coaching from senior executives and communications mentoring from communications instructors and professionals.2018-presentWashington University-Fudan University EMBA Program Sustaining Value through Corporate StrategyA four-day required course focusing on multi-business and global strategy setting and leadership. Participants examined three key responsibilities for corporate strategists—finding growth, developing talent to sustain that growth, and managing performance. As a final project, students examine and critique these activities in their own organizations.Innovation ProjectsCourse serves as a capstone to the EMBA program and requires students to develop a new business from ideation to formal business plan. The course runs over the last 1/3 of the EMBA program, with teams meeting monthly with the instructor for coaching sessions on various aspects of their business plan.
