Course Syllabus

Fall 2017

Course Description:

3 credit hour course - An intense study of the client-centered collaborative relationship.

Therapeutic use of self, interview skills, communication styles, professional/personal values, family systems, sociocultural influences, and group process will be explored through group discussion, experiential learning and client interviews.

Relationship to Curriculum Design:

This course provides the foundation necessary for students to become reflective and empathetic practitioners in the field of occupational therapy. It introduces the concepts related to holistic practice viewing the person, occupation and the environmental context as a whole. Exploration of the uniqueness of occupation and the therapeutic aspects of self are introduced. Development of competent interpersonal and communication skills is emphasized.

Didactic Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Understand the importance and meaning of client-centered practice

2. Demonstrate skills (including therapeutic use of self) essential to client-centered practice

3. Complete an occupational profile

4. Describe the value of occupational therapy to a variety of clients, family members and professionals

5. Apply frames of reference, theories and instructional design models to the creation of meaningful group experiences that support occupational performance and participation in diverse populations

6. Demonstrate collaborative skills with occupational therapy assistant students while designing and implementing group interventions

Professional development is an integral part of becoming an Occupational Therapist.  Receiving and giving constructive feedback is necessary for professional growth to occur.  When skills and knowledge are evaluated, students are encouraged to recognize the value of the constructive input and adapt accordingly.

Required Purchase:

In lieu of purchasing a text book, all students are required to purchase and complete the official Myers-Briggs personality test. The test can be purchased and completed on-line. Students will also be required to buy a 2-inch 3-ring binder.
