Harpers Weekly For centres studying the 19th Century Core, this site is very useful for the American Civil War and Reconstruction topics. It is based around the nineteethcentury American periodical Harpers Weekly and contains articles from the period and many wonderful, but challenging, cartoons. The best approach is to log in and browse.

J D Clare Modern World History A very useful website providing coverage of most of the 20th Century Core as well as Germany, Russia, the USA and China. Includes a summary of the main points of the content, sources, help with revision and exam-type questions and mark schemes. For centres studying the 19th Century Core Content it also covers the causes of the First World War.

Library of Congress teachers Particularly useful for activities to develop source skills but also provides a wealth of other activities and primary sources. Especially useful for US history.

Spartacus Educational spartacus- This site contains a wealth of material including many aspects of the 20th Century Core and Depth Studies on The First World War, Germany and Russia. Materials include biographical studies, detailed content coverage and sources. For centres studying the 19th Century Core it includes material on the American Civil War and the causes of the First World War.

The National Archives .uk/education/ Contains a wealth of primary sources and activities on numerous historical topics. The best approach is to log in and explore the site.

Thinking History thinkinghistory.co.uk/index.php A website created by Ian Dawson to provide activities, ideas and resources for history teachers seeking to broaden their range of teaching methods. Many of the activities have been sent in by teachers. It contains a range of fascinating activities that are designed to encourage students to think and understand. Some involve role play and many are based on twentieth century history. The one on speed dating by SS officers is a winner.
