QUESTION

Can we raise enough money to buy a Promethean Interactive Whiteboard for our classroom? The PTA has agreed to fund $500 of the $1,400 needed to purchase the whiteboard. The school board has agreed to match the PTA's funding of $500. The students will need to raise $400 over a period of 3 months in order to purchase the board.

PLAN

• Since it is winter time, students will brainstorm a list of items they see during the winter in order to decide what the class can make and sell to the school.

• Students votes will be counted by making a bar graph.

• The class will be divided into 3 small groups. Using classroom, library, and lab computers, the students will visit websites to decide on winter crafts and items they could easily make and sell to raise money. This will be done with the classroom teacher, librarian, and technology instructor.

• The students will dictate a letter to their parents explaining their project and asking for items to be donated and parent volunteers to help create the products.

• The students will create posters using many of their kindergarten sight words, advertising their sale. They will also make tally sheets that would be used to take orders daily from the classes.

• The students will decide on where and when to sell their products.

• The class will create an iphoto slideshow of the project to share with the school and parents.

SCHEDULE

Weeks 1 -2: Students will brainstorm and research web sites to choose crafts/items to make and sell

Weeks 3-4: Students and Parents will make crafts/items to sell

Weeks 5-12: Sell crafts/items to students, parents and teachers

Week 13: Purchase Promethean Interactive Whiteboard

PROJECT

• After researching the websites, the students decided they wanted to make snowflakes using toilet tubes, white paint, glitter and red ribbon. They would also make hot cocoa baggies filled with powdered hot cocoa mix, mini marshmallows and miniature chocolate morsels.

• Students voted on prices to charge for each of the items. They chose $2.00 for each snowflake and $1.00 for each hot cocoa baggie.

• The students and parents made posters and flyers to advertise the sale of their products. The sale was also mentioned on the morning announcements each day.

• Students (and parents) spent 2 weeks during and after school making snowflake ornaments using donated toilet tubes, glitter and red ribbons.

• During hands on math time each day for 2 weeks, students took turns measuring scoops of hot cocoa, marshmallows and miniature chocolate chip morsels into baggies. This allowed students to count marshmallows and use non-standard forms of measurement to measure drink powder and chocolate chips.

• The students voted to sell their products in the mornings for eight weeks, and at two evening PTA meetings.

• Parent volunteers helped the students set up a stand to sell their products at two PTA meetings.

• Students also took orders from each class daily. Orders were taken using tally marks under each teachers' name.

• Third grade buddies came at the end of each day to help the kindergartners sort and count the money.

• Parents, students and teachers took photos of every step of the project. Students dictated sentences about their pictures.

• Students then presented the iPhoto slideshow to the school.
