(Game #31) No. #13-seed Montana vs. No. 4-seed Syracuse in NCAAs Thursday, March 21

THE GAME: The No. 13-seed University of Montana Grizzlies (25-6) play the 19thranked and No. 4-seed Syracuse Orange (26-5) in a 2013 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship second round East Region game in the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., Thursday, March 21. (Griz Radio Network on Page 4). It will be televised on truTV, and the announcers are Brian Anderson, Dan Bonner, and Marty Snider. The live stats link is: .

BIG SKY CHAMPS: Host Montana defeated Weber State 67-64 in the Big Sky Conference championship game to earn the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

REGULAR-SEASON TITLE: The Griz won the Big Sky's regular-season championship with a 19-1 record (the 19 wins are a league mark), which earned them the right to host the league's seven-team, post-season tournament in Missoula for the second straight season.

93RD WIN IN FOUR SEASONS!: UM's win over Weber State in the Big Sky's tourney title game was its 93rd in the last four seasons -- a school record. It broke the mark of 88 wins in a four-year span by UM's teams from 1983-86. UM has won 21 of its last 23 games.

MONTANA HEAD COACH WAYNE TINKLE

(141-77/85-31 BSC, Seventh Season at Montana)

Wayne Tinkle is 141-77 (.647) in his seventh season as the head coach at The University of Montana. His 141 career victories are the fourth most in school history. He is 85-31 (.733) in Big Sky games -- those 85 league wins are the most in school history.

This season he is taking UM to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in his sevenyear tenure. Last season he guided the Griz to the "Big Dance," as the 13th-seeded Grizzlies played the fourth-seeded and 14th-ranked (Associated Press) Wisconsin Badgers in a second round NCAA Tournament game in Albuquerque, N.M.

Tinkle's Griz teams have tied a school record with their fourth 20-win season in a row. UM's 25 victories this year tie him for the second most in a season at Montana with his 25-win team of a year ago.

With its NCAA berth in 2013, Montana and Coach Tinkle have now advanced to postseason play a school-record four straight seasons, including three NCAA berths.

He was recognized for the Grizzlies' success in 2012, as he was named the NABC Division I All-District 6 "Coach of the Year" by NABC.

He was tabbed the Big Sky's "Coach of the Year" in 2012 and recently in 2013. Last year be became the fifth coach ever at Montana (since 1963) to be named the Big Sky's coach of the year.

Two seasons ago Tinkle guided Montana to a 21-11 record and a berth in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) Tournament. Three seasons ago, the Griz went 22-10, won the league's post-season tourney, and advanced to the NCAAs, losing 62-57 to New Mexico.

Coach Tinkle has now been to the NCAA tournament a total of five times ? two as the head man and three times as an assistant coach at Montana. His NCAA trips were in 2009-10 and 2011-12 as the head man against New Mexico and Wisconsin, respectively. He was also a member of three other UM NCAA tournament teams: 2001-02 against Oregon with head coach Don Holst; in 2004-05 vs. Washington; and in 2005-06 season (against Nevada and Boston College) with head man Larry Krystkowiak.

Tinkle, 47, was named the 26th head men's basketball coach in the summer of 2006. He served as an assistant coach at UM for the previous five seasons, working with Krystkowiak, Pat Kennedy (2002-04), and Holst.

He was a standout forward for the Griz from 1985-89 and a three-time All-Big Sky pick his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. He is ranked fourth in UM history in career rebounds with 836 and sixth in career points with 1,500. He was Montana's Carl Dragstedt Award (MVP) winner in 1988 and 1989. He led the team in rebounding in 1987 (8.9 average), 1988 (8.4 average), and 1989 (8.7 avg.), and in scoring in 1988 (16.2 ppg) and 1989 (17.1 ppg).

He played in the pro ranks for 12 seasons (1990 to 2001). In his professional career he played in the CBA, as well as in Sweden, Spain, Italy and Greece. He played his final four seasons in Spain from 1995-99, where he was ranked among the league's top scorers and rebounders.

Wayne was born in Milwaukee, Wis., and is the youngest of 11 children (seven girls and four boys). He is a 1984 graduate of Ferris High School in Spokane, Wash. He received his degree in health and human performance from UM in 2005.

He is married to former Lady Griz star Lisa McLeod, who was inducted into the Grizzly Sports Hall of Fame in 2011. Wayne and Lisa have three children: daughters Joslyn and Elleson, and son Tres. Joslyn is a senior starter at Stanford, while Elle plays hoops at Gonzaga.
