COACH TINKLE RADIO SHOW

The Wayne Tinkle Radio Show airs live from Paradise Falls every Tuesday, from 6:00-6:30 p.m. on KGVO Radio (1290 AM), with the Voice of the Grizzlies, Mick Holien serving as the host.

Wayne Tinkle is now in his seventh season as the head coach at The University of Montana in 2012-13. He has an overall record of 121-75 (.617). His 121 career victories are the fourth most in school history.

In 2011-12 he guided Montana to its second trip to the "Big Dance" in his tenure, as the 13th-seeded Grizzlies played the fourth-seeded and 14th-ranked (Associated Press) Wisconsin Badgers in a second round NCAA Tournament game in Albuquerque, N.M.

Tinkle's Griz teams have now won 20 or more games the past three years in a row, going 22-10, 21-11, and 25-7 last season. He is 67-30 (.690) in Big Sky games.

With its NCAA berth in 2012, Montana and Coach Tinkle have now advanced to postseason play a school-record three straight seasons. He is one of just three coaches in school history to win 20 or more games in three straight seasons.

Montana's 25 victories in the 2011-12 season are the third most in school history. He was recognized for the Grizzlies' success in 2012, as he was named the NABC Division I All-District 6 "Coach of the Year" by The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). He was also tabbed the Big Sky's "Coach of the Year." He's the fifth coach ever at Montana (since 1963) to be named the Big Sky's coach of the year.

Two seasons ago Tinkle guided Montana to a 21-11 record and a berth in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) Tournament. Three seasons ago, the Griz went 22-10, won the league's post-season tourney, and advanced to the NCAAs, losing 62-57 to New Mexico.

Coach Tinkle has now been to the NCAA tournament a total of five times ? two as the head man and three times as an assistant coach at Montana. His NCAA trips were in 2009-10 and 2011-12 as the head man against New Mexico and Wisconsin, respectively. He was also a member of three other UM NCAA tournament teams: 2001-02 against Oregon with head coach Don Holst; in 2004-05 vs. Washington; and in 2005-06 season (against Nevada and Boston College) with head man Larry Krystkowiak.

Tinkle, 46, was named the 26th head men's basketball coach in the summer of 2006. He served as an assistant coach at UM for the previous five seasons, working with Krystkowiak, Pat Kennedy (2002-04), and Holst.

He was a standout forward for the Griz from 1985-89 and a three-time All-Big Sky pick his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. He is ranked fourth in UM history in career rebounds with 836 and sixth in career points with 1,500. He was Montana's Carl Dragstedt Award (MVP) winner in 1988 and 1989. He led the team in rebounding in 1987 (8.9 average), 1988 (8.4 average), and 1989 (8.7 avg.), and in scoring in 1988 (16.2 ppg) and 1989 (17.1 ppg).

He played in the pro ranks for 12 seasons (1990 to 2001). In his professional career he played in the CBA, as well as in Sweden, Spain, Italy and Greece. He played his final four seasons in Spain from 1995-99, where he was ranked among the league's top scorers and rebounders.

Wayne was born in Milwaukee, Wis., and is the youngest of 11 children (seven girls and four boys). He is a 1984 graduate of Ferris High School in Spokane, Wash. He received his degree in health and human performance from UM in 2005.

He is married to former Lady Griz basketball star Lisa McLeod, who was inducted into the Grizzly Sports Hall of Fame in 2011. Wayne and Lisa have three children: daughters Joslyn and Elleson, and son Tres. Joslyn is a senior starter at Stanford, while Elle plays hoops at Gonzaga.

Coach Wayne Tinkle Quotes:

ON SAC STATE GAME: "They are a team that I picked (to finish) in the top five in the preseason poll. Coach Katz has done a nice job. He's got his kind of players now after a few recruiting classes.

"They're playing more up-tempo. They are usually the bottom team in the league in scoring and right now they are leading the league in scoring (75.8 ppg).(Dylan) Garrity is a heck of a point guard. They're spreading it out (offensively) and really looking to attack, so it's going to be a different approach. In years past you've had to be patient and you used a lot of time on the clock, and now it's going to be a little more of an up-and-down affair.

"It's a tough road trip for us, but we're excited to get league underway. We are in phase number two now that we've got the preseason behind us, and all of that was to prepare for league. Hopefully we will start to show what we've learned from our non-conference slate."

ON THE RETURN OF WILL CHERRY: "We noticed that even though he played only 13 minutes it was our best defensive effort of the year so far against South Dakota State. He just brings that energy and that focus, and elevates his teammates' level of play. As he gets his legs under him and starts to feel a little more comfortable, his minutes are obviously going to go way up. We are thrilled to have our leader back."

GRIZ LAST GAME: Montana 62, at Northern Arizona 56

FLAGSTAFF, ARIZ -- The Griz had five players score in double figures as they opened their 2012-13 Big Sky Conference season with a 62-56 victory over the host Lumberjacks Wednesday evening in NAU's Walkup Skydome.

The defending league champion Grizzlies (5-4/1-0) had to overcome an early 6-point (37-31) second-half lead by the Lumberjacks (4-6/1-1), and NAU stayed within striking distance throughout most of the contest.

The teams changed leads just twice and there were six ties, but the Grizzlies took the lead for good on a crucial threepoint shot by senior forward Mathias Ward, who nailed the trey with just a couple of seconds remaining on the shot clock. Ward's big shot gave Montana a 56-53 lead with 4:44 left to play and the Griz led the rest of the way.

NAU tied the game up for the sixth and final time at 5353 on a pair of free throws by freshman guard DeWayne Russell with 5:49 remaining. But after that, Ward hit his big three-pointer about a minute-and-a-half later, and the Jacks scored just three more points the rest of the way.

Ward scored 12 points, as did senior guard Will Cherry, and sophomore guards Jordan Gregory and Keron DeShields, while junior guard-forward Kareem Jamar added 10 points. Unfortunately DeShields had to leave the game in the final few minutes of the contest due to an injury.

The Griz trailed 33-29 at halftime, and also trailed in the early minutes of the second stanza, but Ward knotted the contest at 37-37 at the 17:06 mark, and then the teams went back-and-forth until Ward canned his crucial trey with 4:44 to go.

"Our guys just found a way to get it done," said Griz head coach Wayne Tinkle on his post-game radio interview on KGVO Radio. "We made some of the same mistakes that we've made in our earlier games this season, but we stayed tough, and got the job done. I think we grew up a little bit tonight."

Jamar had a game and team-high 9 rebounds, while Gregory had a career-high 7 boards, and Ward had 6. Gregory also had 2 blocks ? the first rejections of his young career. Ward fouled out with 52 seconds left to play.

Cherry, who had just 2 points in 13 minutes of action in UM's 68-67 double overtime loss to South Dakota State this past Saturday, had 3 rebounds, 3 assists, a block, and 2 steals, to go along with his 12 points, and he played 35 minutes.

NAU, which opened its Big Sky season with an 87-80 home win over Montana State this past Monday, was led by senior guard Gabe Rogers with 16 points, while Russell had 12. Jacks' junior forward Max Jacobsen, who had 22 points in the win over MSU, was held to 8 points.

The Grizzlies out-rebounded the Lumberjacks 38-34 ? the second time this season UM has had more boards than an opponent.

Montana was 23-of-52 (44.2%) from the floor, made 7of-20 three-pointers (35.0%), and 9-of-13 (69.2%) free throws, including a pair of critical charity shots by Cherry with 21 seconds to go.

The Griz defense limited the Jacks to 35.2% shooting (19-of[-54) from the field, 33.3% (6-of-18) on three-pointers, while they converted on 12-of-17 (70.6%) shots from the stripe.
