Subject: Summer 2007 Projects

As most of the faculty and others return from lengthy summer absences, I thought that it might be of benefit to provide a list of some the work that Facilities has completed or is in the process of completing over the summer months. This list does not include all of the work that was accomplished but is a fair representation. Each Campus Facilities Director can provide a more inclusive list. Overall, this may have been the busiest summer in my seven years here. It was quite hectic.

ROCKVILLE CAMPUS

• Replaced sidewalk, loading dock ramps, and ADA ramp behind Campus Center and Humanities. This work will continue into the school year.

• Replaced numerous concrete sidewalk sections throughout campus to reduce tripping hazards.

• Installed a new emergency generator and new air conditioning systems for network operating center in CS Building

• ART Gallery and lobby renovation

• Roof replacements, Mannakee, Computer Science, Theatre Arts.

• Chemistry Chair administrative area renovation

• Campus Center 2nd floor classroom renovations

• Painting and recarpeting of classrooms #’s

• Replacement of Mannakee rooftop air conditioning units

• Completion of renovation and installation of furniture in preparation for movement of Call Center, Auxiliary Services, Banner I.T. to 40WG

• Analysis and inspection of leased space for possible relocation of Central Receiving and removal of storage trailers from campus

• Replacement of all trees at Board of Education parking lot

• Theatre Art lighting, fire alarm and sprinkler head replacement

ROCKVILLE CAMPUS (continued)

• Elevator renovations – 100% - MT, PE, Humanities, SE

• Landscape Master Plan analysis of existing conditions and options for improvements

• Supported 4th of July for Rockville city

• Macklin Tower basement electrical and mechanical system replacement design

• Completed the design development phase of new Science Center and presented the project to the Rockville City Planning Commission.

• Testing and repairs of science lab fume hood sashes (still in progress)

• Completed a number of upgrades to heating and air conditioning control systems

• Completed replacement of a number of components of the campus’ central heating and chilled water plant.

• Asbestos abatement project in SE 119 and Campus Center 206 and 219

• Renovation of classrooms, Campus Center 206 and 219.

• Relamped hallways and/or classrooms in SCIB, Art Music, Science East and West and the Tech Building.

• Stripped and waxed floors in selected classrooms and or hallways in Science East, Music Building, SCIB and Macklin Tower.

• Shampooed carpeted areas throughout campus.

GERMANTOWN CAMPUS

• Installed new sidewalk along Observation Drive from Route 118 to the center of the campus. Trees, lights and emergency phones also being installed.

• Replacement of bus loop with concrete pads. Installed new student parking area and new, lighted bus shelter.

• Major asphalt repair and patching of Observation Drive, parking lots 1 and 2. A total of 32,000 square feet of asphalt was replaced.

• Installed new left turn lane on Observation Drive

• Replacement of ceiling, lights, fire sprinkler heads and painting of walls and waxing of floors in 14 classrooms in the Humanities Building

• Replacement and upgrade of light fixtures in the gym

• Renovation of Goldenrod building begun

• Completed design of conversion of classroom 250 in SAS to an organic chemistry lab

• Completed program confirmation of new bioscience center with faculty and staff

• Childcare center design completion

• Cleaned and re-striped parking lots

• Replaced or repaired all landscape railroad tie retaining walls in parking lots

• Patched sidewalks on interior of campus

• Replaced wooden hand rails and benches with composite recycled plastic material

• Replaced ceiling, lighting, and sprinkler heads in 16 classrooms, 8 restrooms, 1 study area, 4 storage area, 3 locker rooms, 3 shower rooms and all mechanical/electrical rooms and custodial closets in HS and PG buildings. All rooms received fresh paint and floors were stripped and waxed.

• Renovated the photo lab

• Replacement of numerous heat pumps throughout the campus buildings

• Replaced numerous electrical motors and electrical components that were damaged in an Pepco related unplanned electrical outage

• Replaced chill water control valves and condenser water pump in the central plant

• Numerous preventive maintenance and routine maintenance tasks throughout campus.

Takoma Park Silver Spring Campus

• Completed construction of Cafritz Arts Center and move of faculty and staff into the building.

• Started construction of the new Cultural Arts Center

• Completed asbestos abatement of Commons Building in preparation for the building’s renovation.

• Installed hot and chilled water piping and fiber optic cable underneath of New York Avenue and adjacent sidewalk.

• Installed new heating and air conditioning and exhaust units on Science North (partially complete). Upon completion of the replacement of all rooftop mechanical equipment in October, the SN roof will be replaced.

• Moved faculty and staff out of Fine Arts Pavilion and converted art studios into classrooms.

• Moved some faculty offices into Fine Arts Pavilion

• Built provost’s suite in the new Student Services Center

• Moved Facilities staff from Commons into P2

• Moved faculty offices from 3d floor of Student Services into P2

• Final installation of landscaping at the east garage.

• Complete renovation of both stair towers in the east garage.

• Installation of new signage in the east garage

• Stripped and waxed classroom and laboratory floors throughout campus buildings

PLANNING and DESIGN WORK

• Renovation of elevators in Campus Center, Mannakee and SAS and HSS at Germantown Campus

• Facilities Master Plan Update

• College-wide signage design

• Macklin Tower mechanical and electrical systems replacement

• Macklin Tower library renovation

• Rockville Science Center design. Special exception and variance approvals were received by the Rockville City Planning Board on August 8.

• Germantown Bioscience final programming completed

• Takoma Park Silver Spring West Parking Garage design

• Germantown Child Care Center
