Science, Engineering and Mathematics

Montgomery College, a community college in Maryland with national reputation for excellence, is seeking an Instructional Dean of Science, Engineering and Mathematics for the Rockville Campus, the largest of three campuses with an enrollment of approximately 17,000 students from more than 170 countries. A new 141,000 square foot science center that will house the laboratory science programs will open for classes by the fall 2011 semester. Renovation of the two existing science buildings is scheduled to begin once the science center is open.

This position reports to the Vice President and Provost of the Rockville Campus and is an integral part of the campus administrative team. The Instructional Dean supervises the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering and Geosciences, and Mathematics and the Math/Science Center. This position is responsible for planning and budgeting and oversees the hiring, supervision, evaluation, and professional development of approximately 95 employees. The Dean is responsible for ensuring that provisions of the collective bargaining contracts are administered in a consistent and fair way. The Dean helps the unit develop a vision that promotes learning within and outside of the classroom and works collaboratively with other campus and college units to ensure a student-centered focus that will balance college, campus and community needs. The Dean is responsible for program development and expansion for the new science complex and will work with unit faculty and staff to improve student success, retention and graduation rates in science, engineering and mathematics. In addition, the Dean develops and maintains contacts with K-12 schools, businesses, professional, research and community organizations as well as other institutions of higher education. This position provides leadership in the development of grants and other sources of funding to support outreach activities and programs enhancements.

Required Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in one of the disciplines supervised or in a closely related discipline.

• A minimum of three years of full-time teaching experience at the level of the first two years of college in one of the discipline supervised.

• The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to the mission of the community college.

• Three or more years of progressively responsible administrative/supervisory experience as a department chair in higher education or equivalent administrative and supervisory experience.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Experience or the ability to manage budgets.

• Must be able to use computer tools including Microsoft Office.

• The successful candidate will have outstanding leadership, management, and interpersonal skills to relate to a diverse student body, faculty, and staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

• A doctorate in a relevant discipline.

• Experience teaching at a community college or at an equivalent institution.

• Experience working in a multi-cultural setting.

• Evidence of participation in ongoing professional development

• Membership and participation in relevant professional organizations related to science, engineering and mathematics.

• Experience with grant writing and management and partnership development is highly preferred.

• Experience in developing and evaluating curriculum and programs.

The salary range for this key campus leadership position is $83,740 to $142,604 per year, with the initial salary placement falling within the first half of the salary range.

This full-time non-bargaining position is located in Rockville, MD. Participation in a retirement plan is a condition of employment.
