The motto for North Houston Early College High School is Ready, Respectful and Responsible. It is who we are and what we do. As a student of this school, you are expected to exemplify all of the qualities listed in the motto, but for this month, we will focus on the third principle of character – responsibility.

Attendance / Timeliness

Attendance is crucial in the success of any organization, but it is especially crucial in the school setting. Our school rating is directly affected by attendance data. More importantly, time away from class directly affects student performance. As an early college, we do not provide transportation to and from individual’s homes. Thus, it the parent’s responsibility to ensure that the student is at school on time daily. Many of our students come in habitually late choosing to forgo first period to socialize, take care of personal business, or just sleep in. Often, they arrive from as little as 5 minutes late to as much as an hour late with no sense of urgency to make it to class. Many come to school with breakfast indicating they have stopped on the way to school even though they were going to be late. This is an unacceptable practice. Scholarship recommendation forms often ask questions about the student’s ability to meet deadlines and their record of attendance. The actions you perform now will affect you in the future.

College Classes

Responsibility extends to the performance made in the classroom. When a student is not working up to his/her potential, he/she is not being responsible. As part of the application process, our students are informed of the rigors of the early college and the expectation that he/she will obtain an Associate’s degree. Unfortunately, too many students have begun to underperform in the area of college work. Just this year, several students have been caught skipping classes and neglecting to turn in required work. Students at this school have a responsibility to work up to their potential and to keep their scholarship through diligent work and persistence. Each college class costs in excess of $200. Books are often $100 or more each. It is an investment we are willing to make in our students, but our students are expected to make every effort to ensure that our investment is not in vain.

We have the best and brightest students in Houston…Let’s live up to our motto.

Clubs this year at NHECHS have started off well. Ms. Garcia, administrator for clubs states that most of the clubs are operating smoothly. There have been a few changes, but for the most part, all are up and running. All students with the exception of those attending HCC classes during club time participate in a club. Several clubs are at capacity while others are just catching on. If a student has an interest in another club and wishes to switch, changes can be made in the spring. The following is a list of the clubs here at NHECHS:

➢ Art

➢ Basketball

➢ Campus Pride

➢ Chess

➢ Christ Club

➢ Dance

➢ Gaming

➢ Girls Club

➢ News Production Crew

➢ NHECHS Has Got Talent

➢ Performing Arts Society

➢ Recycling and Crafts

➢ Ronald McDonald House Club

➢ Soccer

➢ STEM Medical

➢ Volleyball

Jessica Rico is a senior student who has made tremendous changes in her attitude and behavior. In just one school year she went from being on the list of students who would be leaving NHECHS because of a lack of progress to being the senior student of the week for the first week of school. How did she do it? “Hard work,” she says. Ironically, it was a teacher who gave her the wake up call. She recalls sitting outside at the picnic tables when Dr. T. walked up to her and said, “What are you going to do with your life?” Jessica said that question stunned her and started her to thinking about just what she would do. Her lack of performance had put her in a position where the Associate’s would not be in reach during her high school years, but that fact didn’t stop her from getting all she could out of her education. She began by catching up in her class work by taking summer classes. She then adjusted her attitude to ensure that she had the support and respect of her teachers. She is now well on her way on the path to graduation and matriculation to U of H. Jessica aspires to be a criminologist. “I just want to bring peace and hope to families,” she stated.

In addition, Jessica is an awesome baker. She baked cupcakes for all the freshmen and the seniors at the Rose Ceremony at NHECHS. She hopes one day to own a bakery aptly named Rico’s . Ready, Respectful, and Responsible…Jessica Rico is a Stellar Student

Brian K. Bolton is a Freshman this year at NHECHS. He is the voice you hear everyday leading the school in the Pledge of Allegiance, moments of silence, and the Texas pledge. Brian is animated and his voice makes us sit up and take notice. Where did it all begin? Brian began his journey into public speaking at Ruby S. Clifton Middle School. He was the school announcer for three years. While there he also participated in the Speech/Acting UIL where he participated in oral reading, impromptu speaking, solo acting and duet acting. He has always been outspoken and ready to encourage those who are performing. In fact, you can hear Brian at his freshman assemblies cheering for those who have received an award and hoping against hope that he gets on e too. He is an interesting student who is a car fanatic. He aspires to one day use his creative talents to design cars. He would also like to somehow use his talents to in broadcasting. Whatever he does, Brian is sure to be a success because he has his priorities in the right place. Ready, Respectful, and Responsible…Brian K. Bolton is a Stellar Student.
