SUBJECT: Poor Shift Quality

DATE: Jun. 30, 1995

THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 21-06-95 DATED JUN. 6,1995 WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. REVISION ADDS PART NUMBERS AND ARE HIGHLIGHTED WITH **ASTERISKS**.

NOTE: THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES WITH 41TE AND 42LE TRANSAXLES BUILT BEFORE MAR. 20, 1995 (TRANSAXLE IDENTIFICATION CODE NUMBER XXX-2288-XXXX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

1. Shudder when initially accelerating from a stop (DTC's 36, 51 and/or 57).

2. A bump is felt as the vehicle coasts down to a stop, low/reverse clutch volume over 85, shudder in reverse, DTC's 36, 50, 51 and/or 57.

3. Transaxle slips during 2nd to 3rd and/or 3rd to OD shifts, slips in reverse; OD clutch volume over 135, DTC's 36, 50, 53 and/or 54.

4. Transaxle slips during 1st to 2nd or 3rd to OD shifts, harsh/bumpy 1st to 2nd or 3rd to OD shifts, DTC's 36, 52 and/or 54.

DIAGNOSIS:

The symptoms may or may not be experienced during a test drive, however Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) should be set before attempting repairs. If "coast down bump" is the only Symptom/Condition, refer to TSB 08-07-94 Rev. B dated Dec. 16, 1994. If the vehicle operator describes one or more of the other listed symptoms, remove the transaxle oil pan and inspect for the presence of clutch friction material in the bottom of the pan. If clutch friction material is present use the appropriate overhaul package listed below, otherwise use the seal and gasket package to perform the repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves installing all new seals and gaskets that include revised OD, reverse, 2/4 and underdrive clutch seals and replacing all clutch plates if necessary.

1. Using the procedures outlined in the appropriate Service Manual, remove the transaxle from the vehicle and install the appropriate package specified in the Parts Required section of this bulletin.

2. During the transaxle disassembly, inspect the oil pump assembly for presence of friction material. If friction material is present, it is necessary to replace the torque convertor (Use the appropriate Mopar Parts Catalog to select the correct torque convertor part number) and bypass valve, P/N 4539880, if so equipped.

3. During the re-assembly, be sure to check and adjust as necessary all clutch clearances. For this repair, the preferred Low/Reverse clutch clearance is between 0.89 mm (.035 in.) and 1.04 mm (.042 in.).

4. The seals used for low/reverse clutch piston, 2/4 clutch piston have been revised to D-ring type seals. Under NO circumstances, use a lip type seal for these applications.

5. If friction material was found in the transaxle oil pan or the oil pump assembly, reverse flush and flow check the oil cooler and tubes using Miller Tool 6906 (follow the instructions provided with the tool).

6. Using the procedures outlined in the appropriate Service Manual, re-assemble the transaxle, install the transaxle into vehicle and adjust the transaxle fluid level.
