Fact file: Scorpion (Mortal Kombat series)4229100000Name: Hanzo Hasashi (Aka Scorpion) Appearances: Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Ultimate Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat Advance, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero, Mortal Kombat 4, Mortal Kombat Gold, MK:, Deadly Alliance, MK: Tournament Edition, MK: Deception, MK: Shaolin Monks, MK: Unchained, MK: Armageddon, MK vs DC Universe, Mortal Kombat (2011), Mortal Kombat XVoice by: Scorpion has been voiced by a few different people over the years most notably Ed Boon and Patrick Seitz who has voiced Scorpion for the 4 most recent games. What? What is he?Scorpion is a ninja spectre from the Mortal Kombat series, he has been a playable character in every game of the 10 game series and has even featured in other games such as “injustice: gods among us” as a DLC character. What is his purpose in/out of game? His purpose in game is to provide players with an optional character that they are likely to be familiar with having played a previous Mortal Kombat, as well as looking super visually appealing to the audience of this game. He also suits a marketing purpose out of game as he has appeared in every Mortal Kombat game he has really become iconic, he has been on the covers of games such as Mortal Kombat X and as I said earlier was even a downloadable character within injustice. What was the inspiration? The inspiration for Mortal Kombat come from the film “Enter the dragon” which stared Bruce Lee, which relates to why Scorpion and Sub-Zero are some of the first characters ever made for the game. The inspiration behind Scorpions attire is based from the ninja outfit called Shinobi Shozoku and is a modified version that has changed to become more scorpion like through the years even gaining a harder almost bone like structure in the later games.Who?Who created him? The creators of Scorpion are Ed Boon and John Tobias who both had involvement in the creation of Scorpion.Who does he interact with?Within the game Scorpion reacts to every opponent he faces with a voice line that is often directed at the character itself. He also interacts with Sub-Zero as that is his rival and the guy that Scorpion wants to destroy most.Who does the voice?Currently Scorpion is voiced by Patrick Seitz. Who is scorpion/who is he to the player?Scorpion is a reborn ninja that has the sole objective of getting revenge on Sub-Zero. He is a playable character that has been around in every Mortal Kombat game. Where?Where did the idea come from? The idea come from Ed Boon who said he wanted to create a more serious fighting game that was similar to Enter the Dragon. Where is he set/his origin? His origin is the Earthrealm but he was reborn from the netherrealm.Where is he in relation to the lore?Scorpion was reborn from hell to seek out vengeance against those that not only killed his clan but his family too. He is seen as Mortal Kombats anti-hero, as the actions he takes helps the forces of good but he puts his own dark and gruesome touch to it.Where is he marketable? So the earlier games there self was banned in 3 countries such as Australia, Germany, and South Korea and was even censored in Japan due to the violence. But the character himself is marketable through game related products and has been used as such since Mortal Kombat 8 where he was one of the leading characters on the case. Where is the audience? The audience for the game are young adults as the age rating suggests, the gore in the game is so intense which is what the game has always been known for makes for a higher age rating of the audience. The character however has probably an audience for older players of the game, as they will know/remember Scorpion more. When? When the game released? The first Mortal Kombat game was released on the 8th of October in the year 1992. With the most recent game being released in 14th of April 2015When was the Rival game released?Street Fighter is a rival to Mortal Kombat with street fighter 2 coming out in March 1992, killer instinct was also released close to these games in the year 1994.When was the gap in the market? The gap in the market was very short as there were many arcade styled fighting games coming out at once however the success of Mortal Kombat come from the step to add more drastic scenes called “Fatalities” to the game where you can finish your opponent off in a gruesome manner. When was the idea conceived? When do you first meet them in game? For a character such as Scorpion, you never straight up meet the character but in games such as Mortal Kombat X if you get a demo for the game he is one of only two playable options. Another time you see him is in promotional Material like the Steam video is him and Sub-Zero fighting. Why?Why the audience? The audience in mind when creating this game and character were older mature people mostly early adults that either have played a Mortal Kombat game before or would enjoy learning a new character. Why are they in the game?Scorpion is in the game because he always has been and is now iconic in the Mortal Kombat series. He is also in the game because he was used in promotional material including online videos and on cases. Why are they a protagonist? So, scorpion is neutral but there are features that make him more of a protagonist than an antagonist and that’s because the game focuses on his rivalry as well as he has been compared to anti-hero as he often fights in a way that benefits good characters but in his own gruesome way.Why aren’t they an antagonist?Scorpion could be an antagonist if the player played in the way that makes them an antagonist however if you play the story mode he will always be the protagonist. Why are they marketed the way they are? For Scorpion, he is marketed the way he is because he has earnt that right as such like he is an iconic member of the franchise. Why do they act a certain way?Scorpion acts his way because he had his family and clan slaughtered by Sub-Zero and others causing him to seek the ultimate vengeance by killing Sub-Zero.Why did the developers decide on certain attributes? So, I feel like the developers decided on Scorpions attributes to match that of a ninja so it fights his theme so very high strength, speed and agility. They made his attributes like a super human ninja.BibliographyMortal Kombat Wiki. (2017).?Scorpion. [online] Available at: [Accessed 19 Sep. 2017].Comic Vine.
