v i Req PROGRAMNOTES

e The popular ballad, Star Dust, was written and recorded by Hoagy Carmichael in 1927. Lyrics were added

e s by Mitchell Parish and the song was published in 1929. It has been recorded by many popular music

stars, but the most enduring rendition was the recording by Artie Shaw and his orchestra in 1941 during

U the Big Band era. Since that time it has been listed among the most popular songs ever published and

rrecorded.

l Star Dust has a unique music structure. The verse (16 measures) and the chorus (32 measures) have a melodic forms that could stand alone as separate songs. However, they fit well together, giving the song

P g its unending fame.

e This arrangement for solo instrument with concert band accompaniment utilizes both the verse and the L chorus in presenting this memorable popular ballad.

Please note: Our band and orchestra music is now being collated by an automatic high-speed system. The enclosed parts are now sorted by page count, rather than score order.

NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR Please note that the stave (Solo) in the middle of the score is in concert pitch. The electric bass part is vital to the ballad feeling. If one is not available, have your tuba section strive for

y that sustained bass style. l e Dynamic levels are carefully marked and can be adjusted to the size of the accompanying ensemble.

s The soloist should dominate throughout (other than measures 34 through 37, 39 through 40, and 49 a through 53).

n h Notice the eighth notes are played as swing eighth notes in all parts of measures 34 through 40. c THE SOLOIST

O u r This solo is appropriate for an alto saxophone or trumpet at di erent levels of ability, from the moderately

advanced performer in a school ensemble or community band to an advanced adult performer in a

P professional group. This setting can be approached in several ways.

For the school performer, the arrangement can be performed as written utilizing a "jazz ballad" style.

s For a more advanced performance, the "verse" can be performed in a "recitative" style in each of the

w e four-measure phrases. (Be careful of the fourth measure in each of the four phrases, allowing for chordal

r changes in the accompaniment going to the next phrase.) For the advanced adult performer, in addition i to the verse in the recitative form, the chorus could have more "ad lib" embellishments performed in a

personal and polished sublime manner.

e u Remember that Star Dust should sound like a beautiful melody with personal touches and not like a jazz

q exercise!
