**METROPOLITAN OPERA RADIO BROADCAST ALERT**

Karita Mattila Stars in Janáček’s Kát’a Kabanová

in a Broadcast from the Met Archives

Radio Broadcast: Saturday, May 2 at 1:00 p.m. ET

The 2019-20 Metropolitan Opera Radio Broadcast season continues with Janáček’s Kát’a Kabanová, starring renowned Finnish soprano Karita Mattila in a performance from 2004. Mattila sang the title role of a sensitive young woman who yearns to escape an oppressive domestic life. Tenor Jorma Silvasti was Kát’a’s lover Boris, and mezzo-soprano Judith Forst sang the role of her domineering mother-in-law Kabanicha. The cast also featured Magdalena Kožená and Raymond Very as the young lovers Varvara and Vanya, Chris Merritt as Kát’a’s husband Tichon, and Vladimir Ognovenko as the curmudgeonly Dikoj. The late, revered Czech maestro Jiří Bělohlávek conducted Janáček’s hauntingly beautiful score. This archival performance of Kát’a Kabanová from December 25, 2004, will be heard over the Toll Brothers-Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network at 1:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, May 2.

Karita Mattila has enjoyed an extraordinary career as one of opera’s most compelling sopranos. She made her Met debut in 1990 as Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni and has returned since then in some 150 performances. In addition to starring at the Met in two other Janáček operas – in the title role of Jenůfa and as Emilia Marty in The Makropulos Case – her memorable portrayals have included Leonore in Beethoven’s Fidelio, Lisa in Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades, the title role in Strauss’s Salome, and the Wagner roles of Elsa in Lohengrin and Eva in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. In 2016, she revisited Jenůfa at the Met performing the role of Kostelnicka, and last season she sang Madame de Croissy in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites under the baton of Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin in a production that was part of the Met’s Live in HD series.

While live performances have been cancelled at the Met due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Saturday matinee broadcasts have continued, featuring pre-recorded performances, and will conclude on May 9 with Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda, starring Joyce DiDonato, Elza van den Heever, and Matthew Polenzani, in a performance from 2013.
