Party Food of the 1920's!

Taylor Kimball

Introduction

Just like everything else from this era, the array of food prepared for parties was extravagant. From the fivestar, four-course meals, to the illegal, but yet massive, display of alcohol, everything about the cuisine of a 1920's party screamed rich, powerful, and carefree.

Hors d'oeuvres and Appetizers

? Bread was the most commonly served hors d'oeuvres ? Chinese and Italian foods were extremely popular during this

period ? Butlers were put to use during parties to make sure guests had a

variety of foods offered to them throughout the night ? Examples I would use on my menu:

? Parmesan Stuffed Meatballs ? Deviled Eggs ? Wontons ? Meat Stuffed Olives ? Shrimp Cocktail

Main Courses

? Chinese and Italian food were also utilized in main course dishes ? Decorated meats were the usual main course ? Toward the end of the decade, nuts as a vegetarian protein

substitute came into prominence (Waldorf salad) ? Examples I would use on my menu:

? Grilled Lemon and Garlic Bass ? Roast Duck ? Crown Roast of Lamb ? Chicken Salad ? Baked Ham Sandwiches ? Broiled Tuna ? Fettuccini in Cream-Based Sauce

Side Dishes

? Side dishes were served buffet style, with usually multiple options for the guest to choose from ? A majority of the popular side dishes from the 1920's would be considered normal in modern society ? All were enhanced, at a top-notch party, with various herbs and spices to enhance flavor ? Examples I would use on my menu: ?White Rice ?Roasted or Mashed Garlic Potatoes ?Mixed Vegetables ?Whole Wheat Buttered Rolls ?Cranberry Walnut Salad
