Social 7 Current Events Outline

Assignment Guidelines Along with exploring the history of Pre- and Post-Confederation Canada, another important aspect of the Grade 7 Social Studies curriculum revolves around examining and discussing local, national, and global currents events. Over the course of the school year you will be responsible for examining 3 Current Events (1 every Term) and handing in a summary and personal interpretation of that story.

You can use hard copy newspapers or any of the following websites to assist you in finding a

relevant news story:

?

Watch out for satire news websites posting fake stories! (Ex: Onion News, NewsBiscuit, CAPNews, etc)

Assignment Expectations Each of your Current Event assignments will be composed of two paragraphs, written in full sentences, containing the following information:

Paragraph 1: The 5 W's Summary The first paragraph will summarize the 5ws of the article in your own words ? DO NOT copy and paste. Your summary should answer the following questions:

? What is this story about? ? Who is this story about? ? Where is this story taking place? ? When is this story taking place? (not the day the story was published) ? Why is this story news?

Paragraph 2: Personal Connection This paragraph will explore how this current event connections to your life ? either by directly impacting or indirectly influencing.

? Examples a. Our Lady of Grace new school year starts late because of a cougar in Evanston - therefore you are directly impacted by your school year starting later. b. There is a story in the news about an earthquake in Spain and people are losing their homes, and that indirectly influences you to want to donate money to help them rebuild their homes and community, or makes you think about how your life could be changed from an earthquake

Bibliography: You must also include a link to your article and must cite any other websites you may have used to gain more information. If you do not include a link you will not receive a mark for the summary portion of the assignment.

Social Studies 7 Wells Assignment Checklist You can use the following check list to ensure you have completed all the required components of your assignment

Assignment F.A.Qs Since these are current events, your articles must be from the correct month and year for which you are completing the assignment.

? Ex: Your first term assignments must cover a news story between the months of August to November 2016.

Only one of your three assignments may cover a news story that relates to Sports or Entertainment (Celebrities, Music, Art, TV, Movies, etc). If you are unsure if a story you want to cover falls under one of these categories feel free to ask.

? Disclaimer! A recap of last night's Flames game is NOT a news story. However, a story about LeBron opening a school for in need students in Cleveland, is.

Assignments will be due no later than two weeks before grade deadlines for report cards. Students may hand in their current events assignment at any point over the course of the term. However, students may not hand in a future semester's assignment outside of the current semester

? Ex: In Semester one you may not hand in an assignment for semester two or three.

Assignment Evaluation The completion of these assignments will go towards your Current Events mark, which represents 10% of your overall mark for the course. Your analysis will be graded according to the following rubric:

Excellent (5)

Thoroughly describes and includes the 5 Ws of the event

Proficient (4)

Relevantly describes and includes the 5 Ws of the event

Acceptable (3)

Adequately describes and includes the 5 Ws of the event

Satisfactory (2)

Basically describes and includes the 5 Ws of the event

Limited (1)

Seldom describes the 5 Ws and is missing some elements of the event

Influence and Impact

Total

Insightfully discusses the relevance of the event, especially in relation to self and worldview

Competently discusses the relevance of the event, especially in relation to self and worldview

Mostly discusses the relevance of the event, especially in relation to self and worldview

Somewhat discusses the relevance of the event, especially in relation to self and worldview
