Wisdom Nuggets: The Righteous Stand Firm Forever

[pic]review

Diseases, disasters, wars, riots . . . It seems our world is constantly in turmoil, and many people are terrified for the future. But there’s good news: Proverbs 10:25.

Icebreaker Question: What is the most powerful display of nature you’ve ever seen?

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit the United States Gulf Coast. More than 1,800 people lost their lives during the storm and its aftermath. According to FEMA, Hurricane Katrina was the single most catastrophic natural disaster in US history. Sadly, upon receiving evacuation orders ahead of the storm, thousands of people chose to stay and ride it out.

You may have seen video footage from the hurricane and other such floods: cars being swept away, highways being knocked out, and structures crumbling under the weight of the water. Jesus promised stormy situations would come to this world, but He gave this comfort: “Be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

An old hymn says,

My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus Christ, my righteousness;

I dare not trust the sweetest frame but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand.

Read Luke 6:46-49. When we obey Jesus, we lay a firm foundation on which to construct the rest of our lives. Jesus compared an obedient person to a man who builds his house on a stable, high-quality foundation. Living in disobedience to Christ, however, is about as smart as building a house on a mountain of ping-pong balls.

Some people resent the thought of living in obedience to Jesus. They don’t want anyone telling them what to do. They don’t realize the amazing benefits of building their lives on God’s principles. Proverbs 10:25 (NIV) says, “When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone, but the righteous stand firm forever.”

The righteous stand firm forever.

Can you think of a more beautiful and hopeful promise? In the chaotic instability of this world, we have nothing to fear. For those living in obedience to God’s Word, the storms may roar and rage, but they cannot destroy.

Those who think they’re capable of building their lives on something other than obedience to Christ may do okay for a while. But when the storms come—storms of confusion and tragedy, or the final storm of physical death—those people will be swept away, buried under the rubble of the things they put in place of God.

Jesus Christ is the only firm foundation (I Corinthians 3:11), and the storms of life will reveal whether or not He is yours. When you build your life on Christ the Solid Rock, the storms will still come. But instead of being helpless under their power, you will be like a lighthouse weathering a hurricane—roughed up, wet and cold, maybe even a little battered—but strong, safe, and whole . . . And still standing the next morning to face the blue skies of a better day.

1. What are some things, good and bad, that people build their lives upon?

2. Why does God allow storms to come into our lives?

3. Is Christ an afterthought in your life? A momentary decision you made somewhere in the past? Or is He an ongoing, lifelong commitment?

4. How can you make sure your life is built on Jesus, the only lasting foundation?

Jesus, we are grateful that You love us so much. We worship You for taking care of those who make You their foundation. If we have built our lives on anything unstable, open our eyes so that we may see. We want to be righteous; we want to stand firm when all else is being swept away.
