RED HOT “ROOKIE” FRED COUPLES LEADS EARLY

COMMITMENTS TO THE 71ST SENIOR PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

PARKER, Colo. – The hottest player in golf? While Ernie Els might make a case, the unofficial title belongs to Fred Couples, who headlines a list of early commitments to the 71st Senior PGA Championship, May 25-30, at Colorado Golf Club.

Couples captured The Cap Cana Championship last weekend, firing a final-round 62 for his third straight Champions Tour victory. In his first four starts on the Champions Tour, Couples has three victories and a runner-up finish, solidifying his position as an early favorite to capture the first major championship on the Champions Tour calendar.

The field, which will feature 156 players after the April 7 registration deadline, also includes U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin, a fellow Champions Tour rookie and runner-up to Couples last week. Tom Watson and Bernhard Langer, the only players other than Couples to win on the Champions Tour this year, have also committed to the Senior PGA Championship.

“I don’t think it’s going out on a limb to say that this field is shaping up as one of the strongest in senior golf history,” says Jeromy Manser, the 71st Senior PGA Championship Director. “The way Fred Couples is playing, he could make his own case as a Captain’s pick for the Ryder Cup. All the great ones are going to be here, and this year’s rookie class, with Couples, Pavin and Paul Azinger, is one of the best of all-time.”

About the Senior PGA Championship

The Senior PGA Championship, the oldest and most prestigious Major Championship in senior golf, was born in 1937 on the grounds of another of golf’s majors at the invitation of one of the game’s greatest players. At the suggestion of renowned amateur Bobby Jones, the inaugural Senior PGA Championship was played at Augusta National Golf Club three years after the first Masters Tournament.

Today, the Senior PGA Championship brings both the legends of the game and newest members of senior professional golf to new audiences throughout the United States.

Many of the game's greatest players have won the Championship's Alfred S. Bourne Trophy - a roster that features Gene Sarazen, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus, Raymond Floyd, Hale Irwin, Tom Watson and Jay Haas.
