EVALUATION PLANNING EXAMPLESVALIDITY RELIABILITY/USEFULNESS RELEVANCE/IMPORTANCE CURRENCY REPRESENTATIVENESSETHICAL PRACTICETOPIC: Relative merits of Ford versus Holden versus Toyota utes Research ProcessesNOTESManufacturer’s websitesObviously very biased BUT very reliable in terms of specifications, very important for providing current facts. Reader has to work out the differences themselves – a challenge faced by creating a table of comparative specificationsOrganisational websitesVariable reliability, depends what organisation. Fan clubs for the different makes obviously biased but important for opinions and directions for more research, mainly current and representative of enthusiasts on both sides. RAA and some car advice websites pretty reliable and less biased than some. Depends who produces the information. Independent review such as Choice are probably most reliable. Most important sources for comparative information. Had to reference all sources of information throughout the Research Project.InterviewsImportant for opinions but not necessarily for fact. Took opportunity to go around the care yards. Very useful information about what to look out for. Cross –referencing is vital. Ethically, had to get permissions and accept peoples’ opinionsSurveysInteresting for opinions. Over 100 students answered but they didn’t necessarily know much, could just be impressions. Challenge to bring the findings together, I realised hadn’t asked the right questions. Ended up with impressions rather than facts but still useful because a lot of agreement about aspects of the different utes. Survey with 100 adults would have been better.YouTube clipsUseful for starting research. Also useful for identifying different opinions about various aspects. Again helped identify the differences between the two utes. But bit basic, directed my research towards the manufacturer’s websites.Car AdvertsUseful for highlighting the things that the manufacturers and advertisers think are important features of each car but not reliable for accurate information.ANOTHER EXAMPLE ON THE NEXT PAGE.......TOPIC: Most successful psychological techniques used in marketingResearch ProcessesNOTESAcademic studiesHighly valid and quite reliable because looking for testing of ‘most successful’, should be relative because conducted by academics who are experts in this field and who have to adhere to ethical standards. These were probably my most useful sources of information because of the scientific nature of the information. Reliability also defined if results correlate with each other. Reliability impacted however by the design of each, how many people involved, whether the study has been replicated or not. Reviews of all the studies or meta-analyses are the gold standard. Currency not necessarily important, study design is more important. Incredibly important for this research, most of the magazine articles reference at least one of these studies. The Literature Review of 2011 most important. Followed ethical research practice by referencing all the studies and relevant sources.BooksRead 3 books [name them] and the 2nd book was the most relevant and useful because it had two chapters devoted to marketing techniques. This book was very important in developing my understanding of the different techniques, enabled me to understand what the academic studies were talking about. Psychology language and terminology was a challenge [give examples] and had to look this vocabulary up. Surprised by how many new words had learnt by the end.InterviewsInterviewed two professors and validity high because this is their field. However, the limitation of this research process is that they had not conducted any further research and just repeated what they had written up in their academic studies. Main benefit was that they were reliable as sources due to their expertise and one of the, [insert name] gave me the name of a book that had just been published.Magazine articlesThese magazine articles tended to come from magazines produced for those people involved/interested in Psychology such as Psychology Today so their reliability was probably quite high [talk about qualifications of editor and specific writers]. Very useful for summarising some of the research and giving real life examples. More recent articles very useful for gaining insight into the most current research/ideas and enabled me to identify the most recent studies. Also very useful for identifying experts in the field because they were the ones writing the articles. ................
