FROM OUR CHAPTER DIRECTOR

Hi Everybody...May has been a pretty busy month for Chapter S.

After our May gathering some of us took off for Shade Mountain Vineyards between Mifflinburg and Middleburg. It took a little time to get there but we all had a good time and the weather was very nice. That always helps. Of course we brought some "items" home with us, and stopped for ice cream on the way back.

The very next day a few of us met in Martinsburg in route to Woodbury for a bike blessing at the Faith Methodist Church. There we met our friends from Chapter W, Chris and Christy Hull. After a nice service with Pastor Ron Doverspike, we all headed outside to get our bikes blessed. Then it was back inside for a great meal after which we were off for a short ride.

On the 19th we met at Eat 'n Park and headed on down to Bedford for Chapter W's dice run. We stopped at Bedford Power Sports to register and after coffee and donuts we were off to our first stop. Our leader wasn't sure how to get there so we all just kind of abandoned the leader and went to plan "B". For a while we weren't sure if we were on the right road or not but with everybody’s help we finally arrived at Fishers Market.... And I'm pretty sure I could never find my way back. Anyway, we ended up at the Everett Fire Co. for another nice meal, Chinese auction and a 50/50. I remember Jake and Cheryl won some fudge and so did Arlene. And I'm pretty sure Jim won the 50/50. And while we were there we got Roll for the Dough points.

We had a nice turnout for our bug run but it was not incident free. Jake's bike shut off in Roaring Springs. We all waited around with him and Cheryl until they assured us that help was on the way. Then it was off to Slicks Ivy Stone restaurant for one of their great meals. After supper it was back on the road to Ritchey’s Dairy for ice cream and a bug check. It seems like every time we have a bug run the bugs decide to stay off the roads. In the end, Rick and Kathee Weyer came away with the cash prize of $40, having managed to collect a small bug on two of their stickers. Congratulations Rick & Kathee.

Til next time, ride safe!

Randy & Deb

FROM OUR CHAPTER EDUCATOR

May was Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Motorcycles are vehicles with the same rights and privileges as any motor vehicle on the roadway. Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month is a national initiative aimed at getting motorists and motorcyclists to "share the road" with each other.

Now that we are in June we have to keep up the awareness with programs like the “National Ride to Work Day” on June 18, 2012. This month we will also have Bike Rally’s like “Thunder in the Valley” in Johnstown, PA starting June 21 thru June 24, 2012.

We usually start off the event on Thursday evening going to Ebensburg for the Wings and Wheels event. Our daughter and her husband usually ride with us on their Honda Shadow and we take our Yamaha V-Star. This is about the only time Anita will ride on this bike. She loves our Honda Goldwing Trike. We park the bikes along the street and walk around admiring other bikes, antique cars, and trucks. Then of course there is lots of good food at the wing stands and plenty of good restaurants.

The 8th Annual Wheels & Wings event will be in downtown Ebensburg on June 21, 2012 from 5pm to 10pm. The entertainment will be “Don Gallardo & How Far West” from Nashville, Tennessee from 6pm to 9:30pm.

We hope to see you there. We have been caught in a lot of rain storms this time of the year; let’s hope our luck gets better this year. This is always a good event.

Ride safe…

Lyle and Anita Stoner

DISTRICT RAFFLE TICKETS

The fundraiser tickets for the District are out and are in the same format as last year. The dollar amounts will be awarded based off of the PA "Big 4" number drawn during the evening of each night during August. Any additional numbers drawn as a "bonus drawing" will not be valid. As an added incentive the seller of the $1,000.00 amount on August 15th will get $100.00. The tickets will sell for $5.00 each with each ticket having two numbers for the chance to win. The district will again be giving back a percentage of the net profits, divided among the 21 chapters based on the number of tickets sold. The more tickets the chapter sells the bigger the percentage of the profit they will receive. Members are asked to return sold tickets stubs and money on a monthly basis to the chapter. The chapter will then forward this to their Assistant District Directors.

Altoona Blessing of the Bikes

Ralph has organized a Blessing of the Bikes at his home church in the Juniata section of Altoona. Mark your calendar for June 3. Information appears later in the newsletter.

Strawberry Festival

We are headed to Center Hill Church of the Brethren for their annual Strawberry Festival. We will travel about 100 miles to get to the center of Armstrong County. The food is all homemade and the servings are gigantic. They begin serving at 4 so we will leave Eat-n-Park at 2 PM. Hope you can join us for this ride

Summer Picnic

Chapter S has been invited to a picnic. Cheryl Speacht has invited us to Glendale Year Round on July 14. Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish and a beverage. We will meet at Eat-N-Park at 10 AM or at the gate to Glendale Year Round at 11 AM. A raindate of July 21 is also available. Thanks Darrell and Cheryl.

Two Wheel Tuesdays

Steve Seltzer Powersports is once again sponsoring rides every Tuesday evening. After a light supper at Seltzers Powersports store at 5, everyone is on the bikes at 6 for a ride with a destination -----ice cream for dessert.

Chapter W’s Dice Run

Chapter W sponsored a dice run on May 19. It started at Freedom Powersports and ended at the Everett Fire Hall after a beautiful 40+ mile ride through the country. They had a great turnout with ten chapters participating. Although no one from chapter S was too lucky with the rolls of the dice, we did bring our share of money and gifts home. Diane was asked to pull the 50/50 ticket and actually pulled Jim’s number. Arlene then won the second share of the 50/50. Cheryl and Arlene also won pans of peanut butter fudge in the Chinese Auction. There were plenty of door prizes. Deb and Randy were the only ones to come home empty handed.

SHADE MOUNTAIN RIDE

By Deb Rupert

The Shade Mountain Winery ride turned out to be very nice. We had 8 bikes, Randy and I led with Trav, Joe, Michael, Denny & Arlene, Jake & Cheryl, Ken & Michelle, with Bob bringing up the rear. The ride was around 200 miles round trip but it was worth it.

The day turned out to be quite nice, not too hot and not too cold. Then we stopped for some ice cream and did our U turn in the parking lot, because everyone knows you can't have a ride with-out a U turn...

RANDY’S BUG RIDE

On Sunday, May 20, we once again ran our Bug Ride. Ten bikes left the Eat-n-Park and headed for Slick’s Ivystone in Osterburg. Jim led us through the Loop, over Locke Mountain, into Martinsburg and Roaring Spring. That’s where Jake and Cheryl pulled off to Turkey Hill. Ice cream already, Jake? No, it was bike trouble. We all turned around and the men assessed the smell and the situation. Jake and Cheryl made some calls for a ride and a pickup. Our new members, Mike and Pat needed to be home by 6 so they waited with Jake and Cheryl will the rest of us were told to go eat.

Supper was delicious, especially the rolls and corn bread!!! We checked our stickers for bugs and only found two, both on Rick’s stickers. We decided it had to be “buggier” in Blue Knob so off we go in pursuit of those bugs. Joe was the next leader and we only got a little ways out of Osterburg when we came upon red lights. Someone had taken out an electric pole and it would be a while before traffic was let through. We all did a turn around and headed to Ritchy’s for ice cream. Lucky for Rick, those little gnats hung on tight, because they were still there in Martinsburg and no one else had a bug to show. Rick and Kathee took home the $40 pot.

Woodbury Blessing of the Bikes

On Sunday, May 6th, Wayne & Jean Stuckey – Denny & Arlene Miller – Randy & Deb Rupert, all attended the blessing of the bikes in Woodbury. What a nice time we had, not to mention the good food!!! Pastor Doverspike blesses anything with wheels on it, scooters, bicycles, tricycles, 4 wheelers, big wheels, motorcycles you name it-it was there. One little boy came in on this little 4 wheeler (he was wearing a helmet too) he couldn't have been more than 3 or 4 years old himself... it was so cute.

This is the 2nd time we have been to that church and I must say we will probably go again. They welcome everyone with open arms and the hospitality is something else.

They had a 100 mile ride after the meal, it was a nice day for it too, but some of us only rode for a little while and had to leave - but a great time was had by all.

MAY’S GATHERING

Randy Rupert welcomed everyone to King’s Family Restaurant on May 5. Randy welcomed our guests, Darrell and Mike Gunsallus. Lyle Stoner, Chapter Educator, shared some safety tips with cycling. Randy reminded all to sell the District’s convention tickets and to turn the money into him on a monthly basis. Shirt choices were shown and orders taken. Door prizes were won by Gary Swanger, Denny Miller, and one of the waitress’s Erin. . Darrell also won the 50/50 worth $40.

PROGRESSIVE DRAWING

A member that rarely misses a gathering had his name drawn for the progressive drawing worth $35. Too bad that George Snoberger was not in attendance. He now has proof that his name is in the pot. For the month of June, the pot will be worth $40. Be there and listen for your name so you can take home the cash.

GWRRA NEWS:

FROM THE DISTRICT DIRECTOR

Hello Everyone;

We are very excited with the selection of Dana and Danise Hartle as your new District Directors. Having worked with them in the past, we know they will be wonderful district directors and are a great asset to Pennsylvania GWRRA, effective June 1, 2012

This year’s convention will be held at the Eisenhower Hotel & Convention Center in Gettysburg, Pa. Our theme for the 2012 convention will be "A Year of Holidays". The dates are September 6, 7, and 8th. We have been able to secure rooms for the membership for $94 + tax a night. Please be sure to make your reservations as soon as possible at 1-(717)-334-8121. Be sure to tell them you are with the Gold Wing Road Riders Association.

Rider Education is planning to have an ARC course and a Trike course during the convention. The number of bikes per course is limited to 12. Certification is for rider and/co-rider. The cost of taking this course is $30.00 per bike. This fee will be refunded after each participant is issued a card of completion from the instructor. There will be no refunds made for a partial class or a no-show. Please see the Convention flyer for the dates for each course.

ARC Course—Experience advance techniques in turning, maximum braking and swerving techniques, plus mental and situational strategies in GWRRA’s own Advanced Rider’s Course. This course is limited to 2- wheeled bikes only. NO TRIKES OR SIDECARS! Co-riders are welcome for 2-up.

TRIKE—This course teaches advance riding skills for the trike rider such as maximum braking, swerving and turning. TRIKES ONLY, NO SIDECARS!!! Co-riders are welcome for 2-up.

The Roll for the Dough program has started as of November 1, 2011. It is a great way to get out and meet other people, make new friends and get new ideas for events or happenings within your chapter. Plus, it is a way to have your chapter charter fee paid for by the District. As of this date we have 17 Chapters participating. THIS IS GREAT!

Tom & Renee Wasluck -Pennsylvania District Directors - 570-474-1014 - goldwing@ - Ride safe, have fun

From the SW ASST. DISTRICT DIRECTOR:

The riding season is in full swing for most chapters. Be sure to ride safely as you travel the roads this summer. Remember that the drivers aren’t quite aware of the bikes on the roads again. With all the riding that you plan to do, there are many opportunities to earn the Roll for the Dough points. Tom and Renee would love to have this program have 100 % participation from the chapters. As I write this, seventeen chapters have earned at least one point. We are sure that the remaining chapters will soon have their name added to the list of point earners. This program helps put the FUN in the district.

As this month disappears, Tom and Renee are busy tying up all loose ends as they turn over the leadership to Dana and Danise Hartle. It has been a real pleasure to work with the Waslucks the last 2 ½ years. As a couple, they were both equally dedicated to the position of district director. They are excited to begin their new endeavor and we wish them our best wishes.

Congratulations to Dana and Danise. We look forward to serving as your assistants for the remainder of our office. Pennsylvania is in fine hands with the Hartles and Waslucks as directors of the district and region.

Until next time,

Jim and Diane Heffelfinger

PA S.W. Assistant District Director

What Makes a Dad

God took the strength of a mountain,

The majesty of a tree,

The warmth of a summer sun,

The calm of a quiet sea,

The generous soul of nature,

The comforting arm of night,

The wisdom of the ages,

The power of the eagle's flight,

The joy of a morning in spring,

The faith of a mustard seed,

The patience of eternity,

The depth of a family need,

Then God combined these qualities,

When there was nothing more to add,

He knew His masterpiece was complete,

And so,

He called it ... Dad
