VISITORS

With us this morning, we had Susan M’Gonigle, SD68 Community School Coordinator.

BIRTHDAYS & ANNIVERSARIES = NONE

HEALTH OF THE CLUB

No news = good news.

PRESIDENT - ELECT MARK TAYLOR…

[pic]

-Began our meeting with a warm welcome and a big thank-you to each of our ‘on-duty’ Rotarians.

-Commented on today’s ‘breaking news’. Air lifting of Canadians from China is starting today. Trump was acquitted. Age 103, iconic movie star Kirk Douglas died.

On behalf of the Club, Dale presented a cheque for $ 1,000 to Susan M’Gonigle for the SD 68 Food security programme.

ROTARY FOUNDATION

Many thanks to everyone, our breakfast Rotary Foundation contributions were $ 110. The draw recipient for $ 17 was Greg D.

SERGEANT AT ARMS – RALPH LEMMON

Easily, Ralph gleaned lots of interesting news. Jamal had happy $$$’s for their daughter Katie’s VIU graduation in Digital Media and for the very good photo’s he received from Don. Soon, Mike is off to a badminton competition in Brazil. We wish him a safe and healthy journey. Jodie tells us the car museum is ‘growing’. Many happy $$$’s from Stephen. The helping hands at Favour Valley Acres were much appreciated. From Doug, a big thank-you for our contributions to the Tri-cadet bottle drive. Happy $ from Don T., the VIU convocation was amazingly inspiring. On a different note, Don was very proud to achieve giving milestone #50 at Canadian Blood Services. We too are proud of you. As they say, ‘it’s in us to give’.

As to the draw for $ 30, Tess did not pull a Joker.

ROTARY MINUTE – DALE WEREZAK

Dale challenged us to take a closer look at the homeless and to think about what we could do in our community. The term homeless was first used in the US in the 1870’s. In 2017 there were 575,000 homeless with Seattle having the 3rd highest population. Using a District Grant and State funding, Mercer Island Rotarians and other local groups built 30 tiny (120 sq.ft.) houses in 2 days. Included with the cluster of homes are outreach facilities offering health and medical care, job training, employment and friendship. Ongoing, Mercer Island is committed to rebuilding the lives of those who are down on their luck, one tiny house at a time. That’s what People of Action do and why Rotarians are well known for making a difference and improving everyday life for those in need.

SHEILA BERGIN

THE QUIRKY (NO TURKEY)

CHRISTMAS TOUR

[pic]

Sheila shared with us lovely pictures, interesting history, and personal observations from her holiday to Amsterdam, Budapest and Prague. As an interested and knowledgeable fan of fine art, a highlight in Amsterdam was the tour of the 17th century Rembrandt House Museum. Budapest, widely known as the City of Spas, is a vibrant, surprisingly modern international city. The central area in Budapest along the Danube is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with several notable monuments and buildings. Sheila’s beautiful pictures included St. Stephens’ Basilica, Buda Castle, the Parliament Buildings, the Christmas markets and more. For 8 days, Sheila and friend Maggie cruised along the fabled Danube on the Scenic Amber. They saw Roman ruins, Belvedere Museum, Melk’s Benedictine abbey, Salzburg & Regensburg. One of many great evenings was a private concert at Palais Liechtenstein. For the final leg of their holiday Sheila & Maggie spent 5 days in Prague, a stunningly beautiful city. Prague is known for its Old Town Square with colourful baroque buildings, Gothic churches and its’ medieval Astronomical Clock. Sheila, many thanks for your presentation.

BUDAPEST PARLIAMENT

On the River Tour, Sheila was delighted to learn that her I Phone 11 camera is considered to be one of the best.

VIU SPECIAL COLLECTIONS

On Thursday evening, we had a tour of the Special Collection (SC) Room in the VIU Library. In 2003, the five Nanaimo Rotary Clubs provided funding towards developing this special place. The mission of SC’s is to identify, collect, organize, preserve, and provide access to rare and/or archival materials that support the educational, scholarly, and research needs of the VIU community. There for viewing and in some cases touching are many old and rare publications. There is a book on plant species published in 1636. Another publication holds the transcribed notes from Captain Vancouver’s expedition to our coast. There are several books written in Chinook, the original common language used for communication between the Coastal nations and first settlers. Another interesting publication is the atlas used in the successful Delgam Uukw vs The Queen land claim.
