R Rated Movie Permission Form

Dear Parent/Guardian:

I supplement my curriculum with films that highlight particular aspects of the content we are studying. I do not go out of my way to seek R-rated films for this purpose, nor do I show R-rated films for their own sake. However, many of the best films dealing with the topics and themes we address in class do happen to have an R rating.

As I am sure you are aware, films receive R ratings for a variety of reasons. I excerpted this quote from the Motion Picture Association of America’s website to highlight the general reasons films receive R ratings:

“An R-rated motion picture, in the view of the Rating Board, contains some adult material. An R-rated motion picture may include adult themes, adult activity, hard language, intense or persistent violence, sexually-oriented nudity, drug abuse or other elements, so that parents are counseled to take this rating very seriously. Children under 17 are not allowed to attend R-rated motion pictures unaccompanied by a parent or adult guardian. Parents are strongly urged to find out more about R-rated motion pictures in determining their suitability for their children. Generally, it is not appropriate for parents to bring their young children with them to R-rated motion pictures.” Source:

Films I show in class give students a deeper awareness and appreciation of the topics and themes we address, and may contain any or all of the above criteria. I never require students to view a film they find objectionable, and they always have the option to complete alternate assignments in lieu of watching a particular film. Students may also leave the class without any questions asked if they need to.

I teach a wide variety of classes, and generally show 1-2 films per class each 6-week term, so rather than send a new permission form for each film I intend to show, I am sending you this form to cover any R rated film I might show. You can count on me to be responsible in how I choose, introduce, show and debrief films, but if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. It will be my pleasure to speak with you.

Sincerely,

Evan Brees
