EPA: More homes near spill need air filters

By Kelly Monitz The Standard-Speaker Updated: 09:06 PM PT Feb. 17, 2004

Feb. 17 - the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency believes five more homes near a toxic chemical spill heed protective air filters until a cleanup is complete, a spokesman said Tuesday.

The EPAplans to release results and recommendations from a second round of air sampling inside homes near the former Chromatex plant in the Valmont Industrial Park in West Hazleton at a public meeting on Thursday night, Bill Hudson, spokesman, said.

Five hundred tons of the chemical trichloroethylene (TCE) leached into the ground at the plant 16 years ago.

TCE is a colorless liquid used in the Scotchguarding process for upholstery made at the defunct plant.

The chemical turned up in residential well water in the neighborhood adjacent to the plant, just off Deer Run Road. Residents stopped using their wells and connected to a municipal water system for household use after the EPA's initial involvement.

Drinking or breathing high levels of the chemical can harm the nervous system and cause liver and kidney damage, an abnormal heartbeat, coma and possibly death.

The EPA added the Chromatex site to its Superfund list, or the list of the most hazardous sites in the country 2Yzyears ago when plans to clean the site began.

The agency conducted air sampling inside homes, which resulted in three homeowners being offered air filters to remove low levels of TCE vapors that infiltrated homes from the contaminated groundwater, Hudson said.

?

"We've come up with five new homes that should have the filters,"

he said, regarding the most recent and second round of air testing.

"The homes have slightly elevated levels of TCE vapors and we will

be offering them filters."

The EPApays for the filters, which are the size of a dormitory refrigerator, and the electricity to run them, Hudson said.

Three other homes, where tests showed very low levels of TCE vapors, will be offered sump covers, or small pieces of plastic to cover the sump pump holes in their basements, he said.

All the levels of the TCEvapors detected - even the very low levels were above the EPA's action level for the site, Hudson said.

The EPA also plans to share the results of its recently completed remedial investigation, which will be used to develop the proposals for the final cleanup of the site, he said.

Air sampling, the removal of contaminated soil around the plant and installing a soil vapor extraction system to remove chemicals from beneath the plant are not part of the final remediation, Hudson said.

Soil removal and the SVE system will only prevent further contamination of the groundwater, he said.

A long-term plan to remove the chemical from the groundwater and clean the site - should be developed this summer using the remedial study, Hudson said.

U.S. Rep. Paul E. Kanjorski and other state and local officials are expected to attend the public meeting, which is scheduled from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Best Western Genetti Motor Lodge, Route 309, Hazle Township.

Federal and state health officials will also be on hand to discuss health assessments, he said.
