MSRI:

The Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) is located in an exquisite building at the top of the Berkeley hills. It is next to the Space Sciences Lab, and above the Lawrence Hall of Science and the UC Botanical Garden, and has spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco and the Bay.

The lecture hall is new and is configured to be an amphitheater suitable for chamber music concerts (there is a grand piano in the lecture hall). In the front of the hall are three screens and three blackboards. There is at least one LCD projector and viewgraph machine. The room has wi-fi access. In the middle of the room are benches with individual electrical outlets – and Herman Miller aeron chairs. There is space for our 30 students. Surrounding are seats for observers (no desk top). The room can accommodate at least 30 observers.

We also have access to a seminar room – for 20-30 people, and a computer lab (with 5 computers, I think).

There is a beautiful library. Our reference books will be put on reserve in the library.

Box lunch will be provided every day by MSRI. There is also a small kitchen (refrigerator, microwave etc.) for those on special diets.

I have requested 20 offices – each with two desks and computers – for our workshop. The building is designed to maximize communication among its inhabitants, and so there are blackboards and small conversation areas almost everywhere.

Getting to Berkeley

The convenient airports are San Francisco and Oakland.

(1) Driving directions from airports:

Taxis are expensive - $80 or more from SFO, and $40-60 from Oakland.

(2) Bayporter provides convenient shuttle service. ~$27 from SFO, and $23 from Oakland airport. Call to make a reservation.

(3) Both San Francisco and Oakland airports are accessible by public transit: BART is very convenient and costs ................
