What student learning outcomes were assessed this year, and why?The program was in the process of revising student learning outcomes and assessments during the 2013/14 academic year; unfortunately we lost our one dedicated management faculty member that year (stayed for one quarter) and haven’t been able to replace him until this fall (2015). We hired an experienced aviation management faculty member (who is also our Chair) who will develop strategic assessment tools designed to capture the accomplishment of outcomes for the Aviation Management (AM) and Aviation Maintenance (AMM) specializations within the Aviation Management degree program.Even though we await the development of these assessment strategies to be implemented this academic year, we were able to conduct very limited assessments for learner outcome 4 during AY 14-15. Outcome 4: Describe the fundamental principles of an aviation safety management program and identify the major operational hazards applicable to general aviation and airline operations. This outcome relates to Department Goal 1 - Students will demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to be successful in their chosen aviation field, College Goals 1 and 2 - 1. Provide for an outstanding academic, professional growth experience for students at all CWU locations; and, 2. Prepare students to participate in an increasingly diverse economy and environment, and University Goals 1, 2 and 5 - 1. Maintain and strengthen an outstanding academic and student life on the Ellensburg Campus; 2. Provide for an outstanding academic and student life at the university centers; and, 5. Achieve regional and national prominence for the university We were also able to capture general satisfaction with the CWU Aviation Management degree program through a survey given to 3 graduating senior Ellensburg campus Aviation Management students who participated in the “Senior Exit Survey” at the end of the spring 2015 quarter.2. How were they assessed?Outcome 4 was partially assessed through a survey given to 4 students who completed AVM 417 Aviation Safety Management at the Ellensburg campus winter 2015 and 10 students who completed it at the Moses Lake Center fall 2014. The Likert-scale survey is designed to measure self-perception of improvement of knowledge of the fundamental principles of aviation safety management and the technologies and organizations used to help mitigate risk in aviation flight operations.General satisfaction with the CWU Aviation Management degree program was also partially assessed through a survey given to 3 graduating senior Ellensburg campus Aviation Management students who participated in the “Senior Exit Survey” at the end of the spring 2015 quarter.3. What was learned? The following tables show stated criteria and goals for each criterion.Criterion 1 results below partially apply to Student Learner Outcome 4: Describe the fundamental principles of an aviation safety management program and identify the major operational hazards applicable to general aviation and airline operations. Results for 4 students who completed AVM 417 Aviation Safety Management and participated in the survey below at the Ellensburg campus Winter 2015.Question:“As a result of taking AVM 417 …Strongly DisagreeDisagreeNeutralAgreeStrongly Agree1. …my understanding of key safety terms and concepts has grown considerably.” 42. … I have a better understanding of technological advances that contribute to flight safety.”43. … my appreciation for how historic aircraft accidents have contributed to the development and evolution of aircraft safety has increased.”44. …I better understand the fundamental concepts of safety program management.”45. …I feel confident I would succeed if I were to work for the safety department at an airline or other aviation organization.”13Total0 (0%) 0 (0%) 0 (0%) 1 (5%)19 (95%)QuarterStudents SurveyednGoal for Criterion 9 80% percent agree or strongly agreeGoals for Criterion 9:80% of students surveyed met criterion 9Winter 2015AVM 4174100%ExceededResults for 10 students who completed AVM 417 Aviation Safety Management and participated in the survey below at the Moses Lake Center campus Fall 2014.Question:“As a result of taking AVP 340 …Strongly DisagreeDisagreeNeutralAgreeStrongly Agree1. …my understanding of key safety terms and concepts has grown considerably.” 912. … I have a better understanding of technological advances that contribute to flight safety.”1453. … my appreciation for how historic aircraft accidents have contributed to the development and evolution of aircraft safety has increased.”284. …I better understand the fundamental concepts of safety program management.”555. …I feel confident I would succeed if I were to work for the safety department at an airline or other aviation organization.”154Total0 (0%) 0 (0%) 2 (4%) 25 (50%)23 (46%)QuarterStudents SurveyednGoal for Criterion 9 80% percent agree or strongly agreeGoals for Criterion 9:80% of students surveyed met criterion 9Fall 2014AVM 4171096%ExceededThree (3) graduating senior Aviation Management students who answered the first 17 questions (applicable to their major) in the “Aviation Senior Exit Survey” at the Ellensburg campus Spring 2015.N/AStrongly DisagreeDisagreeNeutralAgreeStrongly Agree1. I would recommend this program to a friend. The only thing I would change would be less online classes. I don’t think they are as effective.I would suggest offering some classes more often.
