It was not necessarily intended to be a starting point for the typical section, but an option when cost saving measures are needed on GRIP type corridors where capacity is not the justification for the project. The 10 MPH over design criteria is mainly focused on sight distance. Vertical sight distance should meet 10 mph over the speed limit since no left turn lanes are provided and there is increase likelihood of a car stopped in the through lane.Drainage ManualDrew Martin said that GDOT would like to revise the drainage manual to be more of a policy manual and cut out all of the reference material that is non policy. The need for this change has been shown on MMIP and design build projects, where the current manual lacks clarity on what is GDOT policy.Drew sees the process occurring in four phases:Phase 1 – separate policy from reference material. The group should each review Chapter 4 by the next meeting, highlight the sections that are procedural and could be potentially removed (example was how to use the rational method). After the next meeting, we will assign chapters to two individuals, one to complete a first review and the other to check that input. This phase will aim to be completed in early August.Phase 2 – determining what other policies should be included in the manual that are not currently. The group could question their respective companies to compile a list.To be completed in early September.Phase 3 – determining the hierarchy of policy – what is a guideline vs. standard and will it require a design variance or a deviation.Phase 4 – technical writing and review to publication. Drew said GDOT would likely hire externally for the technical writing. The group discussed and believed phases 1, 2 & 3 could be completed within the next year.Follow-up ItemsGDOT UpdatesFrank felt like version numbers could be added to GDOT templates. Still considering the need for set release dates of manuals.Roundabout DesignGDOT is developing a practical guide for roundabout design. It is currently in internal review and Frank will try to get a copy for the subcommittee to review prior to release.Sight Distance PresentationGDOT is also preparing a standard for the sight distance preparation. Frank will try to share this with the group also, but stated that the intent is not for these to be reviewed by GDOT at field plan reviews, but they may be referenced if there appears to be an issue.OpenRoads Designer CE (ORDCE)GDOT is now aiming for full rollout by mid 2020. Frank is hoping consultants can download workspaces in the fall to start testing.Frank said that GDOT is starting conversations to create a Bentley Tech Day similar to one recently put on in Colorado. Bentley would preview their upcoming software. ................
