INTRODUCTION
This Resource Guide is provided to you by the Jacobus tenBroek Library of the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) Jernigan Institute. This guide gives a brief overview of our library and lists the free literature and the blindness-related resources and products available through our Independence Market.
Our library, named in honor of the founder of the National Federation of the Blind, is dedicated to telling the story of blindness from the perspective of blind people. The Jacobus tenBroek Library, encompassing over 16,000 square feet, houses materials in multiple formats including Braille and large print as well as audio and electronic files. An environmentally controlled archive stores our most valuable items. We also have accessible exhibits that illustrate the achievements of blind people.
Our collection includes materials chronicling the history of the organized blind movement as well as a wide range of historical and contemporary material written by blind authors and material written for the blind. We also have the papers of Dr. Jacobus tenBroek, the founding president of the NFB and a distinguished blind professor who taught at the University of California at Berkeley from 1942 to 1968. Dr. tenBroek is well known for his writings on constitutional law, reforming social welfare, and promoting immigrant rights. In addition, Dr. tenBroek’s perspective on blindness became the philosophical underpinning of the NFB.
The library also houses audio and video footage of advocacy efforts taken over the last forty years, model rehabilitation programs, NFB national conventions, historic speeches of the Federation, as well as the extensive writings of our beloved leader and past president, Kenneth Jernigan, and of our current President, Marc Maurer, who has led us since 1986.
We are a research library, not a lending library. As such, we welcome professionals in the blindness field, researchers, blind people, their friends and family, and the general public to visit our collection in person or via the Web at nfb/JtBLibrary.asp. Please contact our reference desk at the number listed below if you have questions about our collection. We will be happy to assist you.
The National Federation of the Blind Independence Market, housed in the Jacobus tenBroek Library, features blindness-related literature, resources, and products helpful to those who are blind or experiencing vision loss and to their friends and families. Our extensive free literature collection includes how-to materials as well as inspirational and thoughtful speeches, articles, and stories on all aspects and experiences of blindness from the perspective of the blind person. Taken separately, each piece of literature or story may reveal one person’s experience or thoughts as a blind person. However, taken as a whole, there is a unifying thread throughout the literature that conveys the truth that the real problem concerning blindness is the misconceptions that people have about it. Collectively the literature tells the story of the organized blind’s efforts to promote equality for all people in all aspects of life.
This literature is available in alternative formats including Braille, cassette, print, and electronic (through our Web site.) The blindness-related products that we carry (such as canes, talking watches and clocks, measuring devices, housewares, etc.) are provided because they offer a means for the user to perform the everyday tasks necessary to live independent and full lives.
The free literature and the blindness-related products offered by our library are listed in this guide. Items may be ordered via standard mail using the enclosed order form, via e-mail at IndependenceMarket@, or online at . Orders may also be placed by telephone at (410) 659-9314, extension 2216, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST. Visitors to the Jacobus tenBroek Library may also obtain these items from our Independence Market in person.
